  Hey Jonathon, if you’re very overweight it is possible for you to lose three to four pounds a week. Two pounds a week is recommended for most people, with the following rationale:
  
  There are 3500 calories in one pound. To lose two pounds in one week you’d have to burn 1000 more calories than you consume for each day of the week. A 1000 calorie deficit is not quite as bad as it sounds if you’re willing to exercise. For instance, 1 hour of jump rope can burn between 600 and 800 calories per hour, and you would only have to consume around 300 calories less to make up the difference of 1000. Unfortunately, most people are not willing to exercise; they would rather starve themselves, thinking this will yield faster results with the least amount of effort. The problem with this approach is that, even if one were able to eat 1000 calories less each day (and many find they easily can, actually), eventually such a diet would cause you to lose as much muscle as fat. So someone who wishes to reduce from 180 pounds to 130 might get there through starvation and find that they are still quite fat. This person will also find that she now has to work very hard to lose whatever fat is left, as her metabolism will be significantly slower, and her skin will appear very ‘loose’ because it has little muscle underneath to support it. She will also have less energy and be less motivated, and will likely regain most if not more than the weight she lost — but this time it will all be fat. The answer is, of course, to exercise a lot (STRENGTH TRAINING), rather than starve yourself.
  
  Don’t forget that the kid on MTV will have lost a lot of water weight during that first month; 10-15 pounds. If you’re trying to lose weight, I think luck is on your side; men always seem to lose weight much more quickly than women, and they keep it off. I think men can adhere to a new routine better.

  Yes, I would be so grateful to have a friend who not only isn’t afraid to show she loves me, but who is thoughtful enough to reassure me of its unconditional nature, as you did. Your friend may already suspect that you have feelings for her, and maybe she is nervous by it; what’s nice about this poem is that, after explaining *your* feelings, you address what *she* might be fearing (pressure from you), in a direct and understanding way. This poem says, “I love you, and that’s all.” Who wouldn’t want to receive a poem like that?
  
  To whoever said this poem is trite; what love poem isn’t trite? I don’t think the words here matter, it’s the fact that it’s a poem written from a friend to a friend. It’s simple, honest and heartfelt.

  Hey Anna, being 15, or any teen year, is hard. I mean, it really just sucks. I’m 21 now; I wake up every morning and am quietly thankful that I left my teens. Everything is so, so, so dramatic when you’re a teenager. I spent most of my teen years consumed with rage during the day and morbidly depressed at night. And I come from a good home; I can’t imagine how it is for kids who don’t have family support, money or at least some sort of motivation in academics. I think anyone here who would tell you that you’re too old to get angry has either forgotten what their teen years were like — or hasn’t yet gone through them, because EVERYBODY who has been through them knows that teen years are the worst. For now, you can try releasing some of the anger and tension through hard, physical exercise. It works wonders and really, why not, nobody LIKES feeling angry. But please don’t beat yourself up over your rages, or think they’re ‘wrong’. They’re perfectly natural, and in some ways, to be more expected from you than your younger siblings. You have every right to them.

  Being confident doesn’t mean you should throw caution to the wind and let your entire school know something about you that makes you uncomfortable. If you can deal with that confidently, do so, but confidence will serve you better if you avoid those situations in the first place.

  Well, because I’m really curious to know how other girls react to finding out their male friend likes them. I’m trying to give a male friend (who does not like me) a reasonable answer, because when he asked me ‘Why do girls freak out?’ I found that I honestly didn’t know, even though I’m the type that does ‘freak out’.

• My sister and I never seem to get along.
  

  Yeah, it sounds like teenager stuff that’ll figure itself out when you’re both older. My twin brother and I (I am female) used to be VICIOUS to each other right up through our teens. Then one evening during our senior year of high school we decided to both walk our dog together in a park near our house. I believe that was the first night I ever had a real conversation with my brother, and I still remember most of it. During that walk I realized I knew absolutely nothing about who he was, what he liked, what he wanted to be or do… but that I sort of wanted to know. After that, neither of us said anything about the walk or wanting to get to know the other better, but somehow we started going on an hour long walk together through the park every single night for the rest of the year. Through those walks I got to know him better than I knew myself and by the time we graduated we were not afraid to admit we had become each other’s ’shadow’. We went to and still attend the same college, have the same group of friends, eat every single meal together, and still have the most intense, unique sibling bond I couldn’t imagine anyone else would understand. I’m not saying this is what will happen for you, but in my experience siblings with the worst relationships as children grow up to be the best of friends. I hope it all works out for you.
