  I think this is a great idea for you; it works on so many levels.
  
  1) Your best friend will see that you are not worth being a best friend with. He can than move on with his life finding new people who are disserving of his friendship.
  
  2) If she leaves him for you; then he can move on with his life in that area as well, allowing him time to find a girlfriend that is disserving of his affection.
  
  3) If she doesn’t leave him; he will know her convictions to the relationship are true thus strengthening the relationship
  
  4) If she leaves him for you; then you will get what you deserve a girl who finds it acceptable to run out of a current relationship with someone who “steals her away”. Unfortunately you will be the new current relationship.
  
  5) If she doesn’t leave him: You will realize your true place in life and all it will have cost you is a friend you didn’t deserve.

  Those are an important 6 years.
  
  Your parents are worried that by dating this guy you run the risk of missing out on experiencing some of the most productive and life shaping years of your life. What you do in the next 6 years are going to shape you as a person and impact how your entire life turns out. Your parents are worried that this guy no matter how great he might be will hold you back from achieving your full potential and truthfully their fears are warranted. It’s not necessarily true that he will hold you back, but the possibility is there and at a material level. The choice is ultimately yours - you are an adult now; but your parents advise is coming from years more experience that you do not have and the desire to want you to succeed in life; you shouldn’t lightly dismiss their concerns.
  
  If I were in your shoes I would reconsider dating this guy at this time; one of the things that held me personally back in life was to get too involved with my wife at your age. If the two of us had more time to peruse interests outside of our relationship before we got serious I have no doubt we would be better off now.
  
  If you do ultimately decide to remain serious with this guy; I’d advise you to keep as independent as you possibly can; make life choice on what is best for you and not what is best for your relationship. If your relationship is meant to be it will endure any choice you make for the betterment of yourself even if it places strain on the relationship.

  I can think of many reasons why it would be appropriate to judge someone suddenly based on something simple like the way they talk.
  
  For example I would never hire someone to work in my company if they talked the way you are writing in your last lost. It would be extremely bad for business and if I didn’t make that judgment I’d have a bad business.

  you’re absolutely right. science is not a democracy. that why I didn’t say X number of people in the country believe in climate change. I don’t care what your lawyer thinks about climate change or your radio talk-show hack, I care what the experts have to say on climate change. and their message is not ambiguous.[/quote]
  
  Unfortunately the field of Science and the Science expert are just as biased, Corrupt, and suffer from group thing just like everyone else.
  
  For an example of this truth a person only needs to look at the work done in human evolution and the Piltdown Man hoax. In the early 20th century and for almost 40 years after its discovery Piltdown Man was thought to be an evolutionary missing link between early humans and the great ape. Over that 40 year period the Scientific establishment (The “Experts”) continued to both believe in the hoax without performing adequate studies and at the same time railroaded any scientist that tried to decent against the Piltdown Man discovery; including the marginalization of scientists that actually found true early human specimens that contradicted Piltdown Man in the 20’s and 30’s.
  
  The “Experts” had it wrong; and not because they weren’t smart; but because of the way we practice Science in our society. Funding is granted on political and sensational grounds; Pear review and respect comes down to a popularity contest; Funding demands positive results and negative results are far too often sidelined.

  watch this TED talks presentation by Ben Goldacre about how this model of Scientific discovery is causing a major problem in the field pharmaceuticals.
  
  Scientist are the experts in some fields and we shouldn’t forget that when discussing those fields; but at the same time we should not allow their expert status to put them on a pedestal and turn a blind eye to the fact that they are still human.
  
  … if my Doctor says “you have myalgic encephalomyelitis” the first thing I do is get a second opinion and maybe a thrid and a forth. Than I do a lot of my own research on the subject. What I would not do is blindly follow what the first doctor tells me.

  There have been several mass of extinctions in the past; life is still here. Sure extinction is bad for the species that has become extinct; but it can also be good for the other species that share the same environment. For example humans would not exist if it was not for the mass extinction of the Late Mesozoic Era.
  
  Why are we humans arrogant enough to think that we are responsible for all the creatures that are alive today, and must demand that none of them become extinct? This world has changed tremendously in the millions of years before we even existed; it will most likely change tremendously after we are gone; why must we insure a static condition while we are here?

  The globe has warmed up and cooled off a few times over it’s existence and the living creatures are still here … maybe not all the same ones in all the same places since beginning of time, but as some creatures died off others took their place. The only living creature that is going to have a unusually hard time with the current rise in global temperature is the human because they are both aware of the situation and the least equipped to adapt to the changes.

  Want to build your self confidence … “act” like you have self confidence and everything else, including the feelings, will follow.
  
  Come at it from an intellectual stand point rather than an emotional one. You have already self analyzed yourself in this thread and seem to be able to point to reasons why you feel the way that you “do” feel, so then you should have no problem intellectualizing they way you “ought” to feel.
  
  After intellectualizing the way you ought to feel; force your body to go through those motions. Even if you don’t feel like they are correct make your body do them any way.
  
  For example you might feel shy and that you don’t want to talk to someone; but at the same time you might be able to intellectualize that you ‘ought’ to talk to this person. Just turn your body over to this intellectual through and disregard the feeling. Push yourself … just do it.
  
  In time you will find that your feelings will come into line with the intellectual thoughts; because what you will find is that the feelings where wrong all along and it was other more real feelings that where causing them in the first place.
