  Technology itself isn’t inherently good or evil. Its how we apply it.
  
  All of the things you have mentioned are certainly factors. I’ve said for a long time now that the world is overpopulated. Its nice to have all the creature comforts, but it seems that we’ve gone beyond that, and desire things for the sake of them!
  
  Mathematically, growing the developing world to mirror the developed world is simply an impossibility, and if we as a species don’t start thinking about the bigger picture, our species will likely become extinct.
  
  They call this information age. The internet is a wonderfully globally accessible tool. However, with the spread of information comes the spread of misinformation.
  
  I think one of the main problems is we are being sold the western idealism of the great American Dream. And not just in western countries, but all over the world!
  
  The wheels of industry just keep churning out 2 bit pieces of crap that we neither need nor essential want. But as a society, we are in default mode.
  
  We rarely question whats going on and why? We just muddle through life, filling the spaces with short lived distractions, or as my father used to say, instant gratification.
  
  We a limit on natural resources, and a limit on land mass.
  
  I think in the end, the next 100 years will prove to be either, the age of awakening, or the age of extinction for us.

  Myself, I’m an atheist.
  The type who doesn’t believe literally in any God as presented in texts, in other words I don’t believe in a supernatural, anthropomorhpic, creator God as described in The Bible (for example).
  
  However the interesting thing about this belief is that it does not necessarily preclude a spirit world, other dimensions, or the existence of a soul, and even an afterlife.
  
  Actually I’m a believer in reincarnation so for me an afterlife if it exists is more of an in between lives life!
  The concepts of heaven, hell, and purgatory seem unlikely to me (since I don’t beleive in God what would be the necessity of such places be?).
  
  However, I do believe that we are all made of the same stuff, energy and matter, and that the soul ‘detaches’ from the body after corporeal death, (possibly spends some ‘time’ in another place) and returns to inhabit another creature at another point in linear time and space.
  
  The human being, is a great and powerful creature, and yet there is more to learn, more to discover, and more to invent, including undiscovered laws of physics which would allow quite comfortably the existence of such things.
  
  Quantum Theory basically says parrallel worlds and more dimensions than we can perceive with our natural developed senses, probably exist, although so far as we know today, we have no evidence of their existence.
  
  I await the day scientific instruments are invented to detect such things.
  
  If there was a heaven and hell, I think they would be places of our own contruction, and be personal to our souls. Heaven being a ‘place’ you ‘go’ if ur soul is contented when u die, perhaps a place to rest and reflect before your next great adventure. Hell on the other hand to me, would be a place where souls in denial reside. People who cannot for whatever reason accept that they are dead, or were extremely unhappy and unfulfilled at the time of death, and would probably remain there until a revelation occured.
  
  Ideas very similar to these appear in the film What Dreams May Come, and the sequel to the Celesting Prophecy (book), The Tenth Insight.

• Doctor Who fans?
  

  Apologies to Nita in advance, if you haven’t seen these episodes yet,
  
  Haven’t seen it yet, due to not enough spare bandwidth, but I couldn’t resist reading about it on wikipedia.
  
  Yeah, it is a bit…. hmmm… nice one Steve.. but also not quite what I expected.
  It certainly explains a lot about River from previous episodes. I suspected for a long time she was either a lost Time Lord, or had some Time Lordy qualities (in this case her TARDIS infused DNA!).
  
  If though, she and The Doctor only share the one kiss, it doesn’t lend a lot of hope to their eventual marriage, which has been hinted at.
  
  I’d like to make a reference here to Jenny, the Doctor’s clone daughter. Remember how she ‘died’, then was revived, but no regeneration occurred?
  
  Perhaps River is another (so far as we’ve seen) one life only Timelords.
  
  And a few episodes back (haven’t seen this one either yet), those people harvesting Time Lord body parts? Many of us, especially fans of the original series, or even those who’ve researched it, are awaiting this season, as with every season of the new series, the return of a signicant enemy.
  
  Series 1, we had the Daleks
  Series 2, the Cybermen (albeit in a strange parrallel universe version with annoying stompy loud feet), and references to the Eternals.
  Series 3, we saw the return of both the Sontarans and The Master
  Series 4, Davros
  Series 4a (The holiday specials) The Timelords
  Series 5 A collection of old enemies, plus the Silurians, and references to unseen baddies, like the Terileptils
  
  The next logical step I feel in enemy comebacks, and things happening in this season seem to point to it, would be The Rani, our favourite female renegade Timelord.
  
  From memory The Rani had extensive working knowledge of biology, experimenting on a variety of life forms. It is likely that The Rani, was one of a handful of Timelords able to avoid the Last Great Time war altogether.
  
  If my understanding is correct, the Doctor’s recent encounter, involved both biological experiments and a trip to another dimension (similar to E-Space in the original series, where incidentally Romana was left).
  
  The fate of The Rani and various other lesser renegade Timelords is largely unknown in terms of series canon, and there is no reason why more of the pocket watches we’ve seen couldn’t exist.
  
  It isn’t 100% confirmed that I know of, but certain events occuring in the spin off media, during the many years the show was on hiatus, have been adopted into canon.
  
  I think the rescue or escape from E-Space by Romana, and her subsequent Presidency of Gallifrey are among these events. It’s been speculated in fandom that Romana (in a third incarnation, yet to be identified on screen) was desposed by the resurrected Rassilon (as protrayed by Timothy Dalton).
  
  Although fan speculation is leaning heavily towards the silent objecting female Time Lord seen returning with Rassillon from Gallifrey, is the Doctor’s mother.
  
  There is certainly a possibility it was Romana, (or even perhaps Susan Foreman, Chancellor Flavia (the Doctor appointed her in caretaker presidency role at the end of ‘The Five Doctors’) or the Rani even.
  
  I doubt the Rani would have returned to fight in the Time War, although The Master was granted another cycle of regeneration (presumbly by President Romana), so it is possible the High Council offered The Rani (and probably other renegades) something of value to them.
  
  Susan Foreman’s fate is unclear yet, as she married a human on Earth after the Dalek Invasion of the 21st century, and was last seen in ‘The Five Doctors’ in the Death Zone (having been taken by the Time Scoop on her way home from shopping.).
  The first Doctor presumably returned her to Earth, and yet no obvious reference to her fate has been made, other than the Doctor’s admission that he was once a father and grandfather, and that he a family ‘once’.
  
  Its likely Susan returned to Gallifrey (or at least fought somewhere else in the galaxy) during the Time War.
  
  But back to River… I was suspicious for a while that River was either the Rani or Romana, but now it seems she’s not.
  BUT, what was River in prison for?
  Perhaps the crimes of the Rani!
  She could still be her, even though it is looking less likely.
  But we are still waiting our typical original series enemy return for this season.

  Yeah its a tough one!
  Well the answer is no. You don’t have to like his friends. You don’t have to like anyone.
  
  Two things I would consider in this situation.
  1. Is he worth it to me, to make an effort to at least be civil with his friends, or make an effort to be nice to them (even if you don’t like them)?
  I’m sure in that case, he would feel loved and honored if he knows you are making an effort for him.
  
  2. I would say maybe he isn’t having the time of his life.
  If it was me, and my girlfriend wasn’t at my birthday party, I would feel a little sad, even if the night was generally a fun night, my mind would be continually going back to her.
  
  Awwww, wish she was here. Where is she? I hope she changes her mind and comes, etc
  
  I would be missing her, because to me if a guy loves a girl, his birthday would just not be as fun without his love.
