  Once you get started on the “thing” you’ve got to do, I find it’s not so bad to keep going.
  
  So the key is to get started.
  
  I find to get started I agree with myself that I only have to do a tiny little bit of what I need to do, then I can stop again and perhaps reward myself. But often I don’t stop - I carry on!

• my friend is suicidal.
  

  Heya! I nearly commited suicide before, I felt that I’d completely messed up my whole life and that I was never going to be happy ever again. 2 and a half years down the line and I’ve never been so happy and optimistic (most of the time). So one piece of advice would be to say that it’s perfectly ok to feel suicidal, so many people feel that way at some point in their lives that it’s nowadays just about a normal thing to feel. But in time things WILL change, she WILL bounce back. She doesn’t have to feel happy and optimistic now, but she can take comfort in the fact that one day she will feel happy and optimistic again.
  
  Also, the thing that very nearly drove me to suicide was knowing that there were certain things that I felt was expected that I HAD to do, but that I felt there was no way I’d be able to do. I felt I was doomed to fail at things I had no choice but to do and this drove me to dispair. But in hindsight I now know that I didn’t have to do those things at all - they were entirely optional. In my case it was taking my university exams that I couldn’t bear to do but felt I had no choice. But I did have a choice, I chose not to take them and things have turned out just fine! Your friend doesn’t HAVE to do anything in life, no matter what other people tell her she’s got to do. I don’t know if that’s applicable to your friend, but if so I hope it helps.

• I want to know how to stop
  

  You’re not alone, I desperately want to eat more healthily. I’ve found one thing that’s helped that’s nothing to do with changing your attitude to food, it’s to do with changing your attitude to money!
  
  The cost of junk food can really add up, and I find that by monitoring the money I spend on a weekly basis, which is a hassle I know, but still, I’m less likely to waste it on bad food. It worked for me in town earlier today - I managed to resist lovely lovely chocolate (maltesers to be precise)!
  
  This might not help if you’re loaded though. I’m on minimum wage which might make a difference!
  
  If you can afford the money, perhaps reward yourself for not buying junk by buying other things with the money you save, like dvds or books or magazines or really really soft toilet tissue or whatever floats your boat!
  
  Remember, and I’m telling myself this as much as I’m telling you, every little helps, so even if you leave just one biscuit in the bottom of the pack instead of finishing it off, that’s progress, even if you have just eaten the other 19!
  
  Right, all this talk of food has made me hungry! Time for some toast!

• i just gave up a course in the best uni in scotland to do a course in college doing make up artistry.
  

  Try not to worry about what anyone else in the world thinks about your decisions - it’s only your own dreams and aspirations that you should concern yourself with, in my opinion.
  
  As McCool said, we’re made to think we have to follow a certain route through education to a prosperous respectable career, but there’s no set way that you i>have /i> to do it.
  
  I had to quit uni in my third year, dashing all hopes of a speedy entry into the rat-race, everything in my life has been postponed and slowed down, so many of my friends have graduated and are busy getting on with their wealthy lives, but I find myself happy, pleased in-fact that it’s all turned out this way! It takes time to know what you really want to do with your life, so you shouldn’t feel like you have to decide at this early stage, despite what anyone might tell you.
  
  I admire your decision to steer your life in the direction that suits you most, and the fact that you’re happy in the classroom is absolutely fantastic!
  
  Don’t feel pressure to move out, only do it if and when it’s right for you. Having a long commute is a great opportunity to listen to music/podcasts (you can find podcasts on so many subjects on the net) or to read, try and make it an enjoyable experience.
  
  As rememberpoe said, you’re not the only one, there are thousands upon thousands of people wondering the same kind of things about their lives right now. It sounds like you’ve made the right choice, just believe in yourself and stay optimistic, and everything should turn out fine!
