• (1 vote) I can’t seem to balance college work and my life.
  

  Been there. Both in the dorms and at home with family that, though supportive of my overall goal, just didn’t seem to get the effort that obtaining that goal required.
  
  While in THE DOORM, I went to the head librarian (scary creature) and asked there was any cube space available. (Even though I didn’t qualify for the reservation, I was allowed the time because he “admired my spunk and commitment to learning”.) I built my schedule around that time. Classes, Library (like it was a job) and then any work hours I could scrounge.
  After two weeks, my party throwing roommate realized I was serious & asked me to tape my schedule to the door. She then spread the word to the floor. A month later we had recognized “study hours”. Yah, like, people were actually QUIET for 3 hours in the evening. I found, if I started to hit the bed when there was a lull in the noise level I would sleep through the night. If I missed that chance I was screwed.
  
  An upper class man helped me out by giving me this idea. He told me to go to a Baptist Church on a wednesday night, one that has like 500 or fewer people. He told me that as soon as they realize you are a college student that they will invite you to dinner. I thought he was nuts! He insisted and I went with it. Not only did a couple ask me to come to their house for dinner, they also offered to let me do laundry there. When I looked exhausted, the lady offered me their spare room for the weekend. It was AWESOME! Not one time that entire year did they force some religious thing on me. They were just nice and crazy hospitable. I don’t attend university in that town anymore but I still get Christmas cards from that family. Now I think baptist people are pretty cool — they can cook! Whew! lol
  
  
  
  AT HOME: I would post my schedule (with my assignments, quizzes, exams and work schedule) on the refrigerator every Sunday night. This way everyone saw both how much I had to do and how much time I had to do it in. When my family would say “Hey, lets all go . . .” I would walk over to the fridge and say “Man, I’d love to but I have to . . . Maybe next time?”. After a while it became a joke and then a habit. My fam would go to the fridge and say “Hey, have you done your home work? I want to go see a movie.” If I was still for a few minutes and someone came in they’d ask about my class work. I began to hate that list but it did help me stay on top of all my assignments & keep my relationship with my family resentment free.
  
  Young children may have a hard time with the concept but a spouse will get the idea : )
  An hey, children will learn that there is a time for everything, right?

  First, conquering an area of life can not be done with out first a commitment to completion.
  
  Secondly, addiction is basically compulsive behavior despite negative consequences.
