  Under Obama, debt is down, employment is up, and the US is involved in fewer global military conflicts.
  
  Under Bush, debt was up, employment was down, and the economy dropped into the Great Recession.
  
  Under Bush, we invaded 2 countries (for coming up on a decade) with substantial loss of life, without ever finding Weapons of Mass Destruction OR killing or capturing bin Laden, and it’s cost us $3.7 trillion.
  
  Under Obama, bin Laden was dead in 38 minutes… and he didn’t have to invade two countries to get it done.

  The United States spends more money on its military than any other nation in the world. More money is spent on the US military than on the next 16 largest militaries combined. 41% of all military spending in the entire world is accounted for just by the US.
  
  Do we really anticipate the need to fight the next 16 largest militaries in the world, at the same time, all by ourselves, and still win? If not… why the hell do we spend so much on our military? Do we really anticipate the need to fight 41% of the entire world, at the same time, by ourselves, and still win? If not… why the hell do we spend so much on our military? It is not just ridiculous, it is not just absurd, it is absurdly ridiculous.
  
  We could cut military spending by nearly 30% and still spend more than China, Russia, France, Britain, Ireland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, India, and Germany combined. We could save almost $200 billion per year, and still spend more than a third of the entire world combined AND reduce our average annual deficit over the past 10 years by 25%. We can outspend a third of the world or the next 9 largest militaries in the world at the same time, while still solving a quarter of our debt crisis.
  
  Hell, we could cut our military spending by 80%, still be the largest military in the entire world, AND pay off the entire national debt in less than 3 decades.
  
  Explain to me again why the gov’t gets to take Social Security money out of my paychecks… and then not give it back when I reach retirement age!?! Back in the day, citizens kept their own damned money. Turns out people simply weren’t saving enough money to provide for themselves when they got older. So, the plan was to take a little money from each citizen out of each paycheck, save and invest the money on behalf of the citizen, and when the citizen reached retirement age be able to pay back ALL of the money that had been deducted PLUS earnings on 50 years of interest.
  
  Instead, I lose nearly 8% of my income to Social Security and Medicare deductions for 50 years, and will be very lucky to get 60% of that money back in payments or benefits before I die… If I was simply getting back what I paid in (which is the ENTIRE PURPOSE OF THE SYSTEM) then I’d be better off keeping my own damned money and throwing it into say an FDIC insured savings account even if it were only at 1% interest. That would be MY 1% interest compounding on monthly payments into the account over 50 years. Not only do I not get interest, I WON’T EVEN GET ALL OF MY MONEY BACK!

  I pay more in taxes than my Canadian sister… and she gets free health-care. Sure, I can pay roughly $1,000 per year for health insurance, but that just buys me the right to a discount. The care is still not covered. After copay and deductible, perhaps I’m lucky to only pay 25% of the remainder. Not to mention… if I cap out my coverage limits… I have NO insurance. If I have pre-existing conditions, I have NO insurance with regards to those health concerns that are most dangerous to ME.
  
  How’s that for a death-panel? “Sorry sir, but this is a pre-existing condition and/or you have reached your coverage cap under the insurance plan. You are no longer eligible for any coverage whatsoever.” Meaning: Good luck paying out of pocket and/or curl up in a corner and wait to die.

  Not saying that this is the root of it, however, I think a part may be a cultural imitation that unfortunately automatically defaults to the ‘race’ of the majority in the copied culture.
  
  Many nations have idealized and copied Greek and Roman cultures throughout history, and have often unfortunately idealized not just the concepts of the culture, those things that made them great, but also (1) the visual ideal of their art and identity (including ‘fair-skinnedness’) and (2) their central failings that eventually led to their descent from their heydays.
  
  I think perhaps that some less wealthy nations idealize western culture as typified by London/New York/Berlin/San Francisco. But again, I think that sometimes they overgeneralize in what they idealize, and end up mimicking not just the best parts of the culture, but also the visual ‘look’ of the culture as well as the cultures failings.
  
  The only way to test the hypothesis would be to (in the current globalized world) have the western world be eclipsed by perhaps China or India or Africa for 3-4 generations. I would suspect that if that were the case, less wealthy nations would no longer mimic western cultures but would instead mimic and in an overly general way idealize whichever culture had been dominant throughout the global cultural scene (including an idealization of culture, identity, ‘look’/complexion, music, art, etc).

  Looks are certainly a major factor in attraction early on in a persons growth and maturation.
  
  As the person matures, a dependence upon looks for attraction declines in favor of other factors.
  
  Sounds like you’ll have to tilt your aim a bit up the maturity scale and ensure you have the goods to offer someone who is more interested in who you are than who you look like.

  If you could pull scrap parts from a junk-yard super-cheap and you don’t count any loss due to free labor… then yes, it would increase the resale value of the car.
  
  However, it’s a 1998 Ford Escort… if it’s in pretty decent condition to start with it’s worth maybe $1,400. If you drive the thing for a couple of years, based upon the mileage, wear and tear, and natural engine and cosmetic issues, you’re likely going to have maybe $800 in value in the thing. Trying to refit the thing by spiffing up the cosmetics is a lost cause. It’s a junker at this point, drive it until it’s no longer mechanically sound, then tear/shoot it up out in the desert, then have a friend tow it in to a scrap-yard.
  
  If we were talking a car with some sort of classic value or sport in it, then you might have a 50% chance of repairs yielding increases in value that offset the losses due to use. But, that would mean something catchy, flashy, sporty, or nostalgic. I’m sorry, but the 1998 Ford Escort is just too generic a car to be worth it.

  I would argue that a great deal of our military spending is stimulus spending. When we could cut military spending by 80% and still spend more on the military than any other nation on the planet… some of that money is overkill. A fair bit of that money gets funneled to private no-bid contracts and private contract workers. More than a fair bit gets spent on refitting weapons and vehicles that are so outdated that our military commanders themselves have stated are a waste of money. These refitted/outdated vehicles and weapons then get sold at scrap value to Egypt, The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Israel, Djibouti, Honduras, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Peru, and Algeria.
  
  I’m not saying we should give any of this money to Wall Street or insurance companies, I am saying that we should stop giving it to Lockheed Martin ($36.3 billion in 2011), Boeing ($31.8 billion in 2011), BAE Systems ($29.2 billion in 2011), General Dynamics ($23.8 billion in 2011), Raytheon ($22.5 billion in 2011), and Northrop Grumman ($21.4 billion in 2011). That’s more than $165 billion dollars in 2011 in arms spending to just these 6 private companies. That’s 334% of what we spent on education… spent on just 6 private contractors.
  
  I’m not saying give it to Wall Street, but neither am I saying give it to private contractors and to Saudi Arabia. Perhaps give it to workers who are employed to fix roadways and bridges, to expand digital cable networks and power-grids. As they work, you train them and they become skilled-workers, who can now bring skilled-labor jobs back home from outsourced contractors. These skilled workers can found small-businesses (the backbone of a healthy and equitable capitalist system) and help expand the productivity, efficiency, wealthy, and health of the United States as a whole.
  
  Or we can just keep pouring cash into a zero-yield black-hole that has a net effect of subsidizing the armament of several unstable nations…
