SMILES & FROWNS
Smiles frowns tears that drown,
Pain fear they are all here in a smile that be upside down,
Come and see what lurks deep inside,
Others have found it fun laughing as I have cried,
Past was measuring the worst things that had been,
CHAOS a friend when I was in need,
This pain so real why care for yourself when your viewed,
As some alien being,
Life cripples turns and sways,
Gives with one hand then snatches away,
Cry because happy, sob because I’m sad,
Never knew there would be so much pain since I was a lad,
“Live with it ,it’s only a phase “,
“There is nothing wrong with you or your life”,
Oh those were the days!!!!
Do I know my own mind?
With all those memories sadly both cruel and kind,
Smile wink, did you see me blink?
Assumptions made aspertions cast,
HA! Easy life you are having a laugh,
Just give a break for one fucking day,
You be me and then see what you have to say,
Think I’m a layabout? ,Sponge? lout?,
If you can’t understand then fuck you of that there is no doubt,
Pain be real, A measure hard to FIND,
But keep pushing! ,pushing , pushing,
Ding! Ding! Ding!
Break! Break! Break!
It’s not a case of judging a book by it’s cover,
Take someone’s control & leave them bare
Give them a set of twisted rules they cannot understand & dare not share,
Throw in a mixture of abuse pain & doubt watch the sanest nicest demon pop out,
I’ve beat myself so many times not thinking I was being cruel or unkind,
This was my worth all I could be a nasty selfish non entity,
All the makings of something truly horrific its true,
But stop!!! For one second put the shoe on the other foot ,
What if this was you.
that was proper!! strange but good all the same,i dont know about laughs though i felt for the poor lass, you have a talent dont u ever 4get that my poems r err depressing angry sad but nothing as moving as that i will c if i can dig 1 out 4 u.
Julia woke up, She knew as soon as she opened her eyes that she was in labor, after what seems like an eternity she was going to finally have this baby. She looked over at the clock, it was three O’ clock in the morning she sat up in bed, now fully awake. She grabbed her husbands shoulder and shook him awake.
“wha ?”
“Honey, my water just broke, we need to get to the hospital!”
That worked as well as throwing a bucket full of cold water on him. He quickly sat up in bed.
“Your having the baby?“ He asked making sure that he had heard right.
“Yes, We have to get to the hospital.” Dave Flung the covers off and leapt out of bed, he ran to the closet and grabbed the bag off the floor that Julia had packed and threw it over his shoulder, then he came back to the bed and helped Julie up.
He helped her down the stairs and out to the car. He drove as quickly as he could to the hospital and parked the car in the small parking lot in front of the emergency room entrance.
He got out of the car and walked around to her side of the car and helped her out. Then supported her as they walked into the emergency room.
He was almost surprised at how fast the nurses helped her. He had kind of been afraid that it would be like in the movies, Where they didn’t even try to hurry.
They put her on a gurney and took her to a birthing room. Both Julia and Dave were surprised at fast this birth was happening. She was quickly Dilating. The contractions were getting closer and closer together, and then after an hour the Doctor said that it was time to have the baby.
Julia pushed and pushed. She was getting tired and weak and didn’t know how much longer she could take this. She was breathing heavily from pain and exhaustion. The smell of the alcohol pads and the disinfectant was over powering and for a second she thought that it would make her pass out. Okay Julia, I can see the head crowning, I need you to give me a few strong pushes and then this baby will be out. Julia didn’t reply, she didn’t have the energy, But she took a deep breath and pushed.
As her baby came out it seemed to take forever and she could hear the shocked and worried murmurs of the nurses. Was something wrong with her baby? She had never gotten a ultrasound, Was there something wrong with her baby that could have been detected?
Pure exhaustion and that strong smell of hospitals took over and, though she desperately wanted to see her baby, somehow she fell asleep.
When Julia awoke she saw her husband sitting beside her bed. The sun was now up.
“Dave, Honey, where’s our baby?
Dave looked shocked and pale.
“Honey, our baby didn’t . . . . die?” The last word stuck in her throat and she feared the worst.
Dave shook his head.
“No. . . . She . . . .She. . . . .” His sentenced trailed off. It was a girl! This brought a smile to Julia’s face. But when she looked back at her husband the smile faded.
“Then, What’s wrong?”
Dave just shook his head and buried his face in his hands. Julia Knew that he couldn’t answer and was terrified of what was wrong with her precious baby daughter. Julie pushed the call button and in a minute which seemed like an eternity the nurse came into the room.
“I want to see my baby.” Julia said, her voice shaking.
The nurses eyes got sad and she looked away from Julia’s eyes. Julia was now on the verge of panic.
“You must know before you see your daughter Mrs. Hurlbutt that she has a problem. She was born with skin the size of an adult female, but her actual body only takes up a portion of the skin. We have never seen anything like it.
Julia’s eyes widened. She had given birth to a baby that occupied only a small amount of an adult skin! Her thoughts flashed back to talking to a friend a few weeks ago, her stomach was larger then hers had ever been and she was a mother of three. Then she remembered this morning during the birth of her child, when it seemed to take forever for the baby to be pulled out, and how the nurses had sounded worried.
Then she remembered all those alien shows that her brother used to watch. The ones where aliens would be caught and the government would dissect them, so that could find out what they were.
“You can’t Dissect my baby! I won’t let you!” She yelled at the nurse. She realized right away how foolish her words had sounded. Even her husband had looked up at her oddly. Julia blushed.
“Sorry” she murmured.
“Mrs. Hurlbutt, We have no intention of dissecting your baby. Many of the doctors have been observing her and talking about what could have happened. They seem to think that as she grows she will grow into the skin. They still have not been able to figure out how the skin had formed in the womb. And we may never know, I’m sorry to say. Out of all the regular tests we can’t find anything that is different from any other baby’s.”
“I want to see my baby.”
“Okay, I will go get her.”
The nurse left the room.
Ten minutes later the nurse came in carrying her baby.
Her head was a big as a women’s, but you could tell that her body was small inside the skin. The skin itself was a bright red color. This surprised Julia more then the skin. She thought that maybe it was because she had been warned of the skin but not the color.
The skin of her daughters arms and legs dangled uselessly.
The nurse brought the baby over to the bed. And Julie reached out for her.
The nurse handed her the baby and said
“The doctors don’t think that she will be able to use her arms or legs until she grows into them.”
Julia looked into the eyes of her daughter. And her love for her grew instantly. Through all this the love that she had felt since the moment that she had found out that she was pregnant had never wavered under the shock.
Julia named her baby Diamond. For she thought of her as a rare a beautiful diamond.
Two weeks after her and Dave brought Diamond home. Dave packed his bags and left. Before he left he apologized many times, and said that he was not as strong as Julia and could not handle taking care of a child like this.
As Diamond got older she started to fill in the extra skin. The redness of her skin also started to fade and she became steadily paler. Even when Julia would take her out in the sun for hours at a time she would not tan, or even get a sunburn. Diamond had to be pushed around in a wheel chair for she could not walk because of the extra skin. Julia also taught her at home because she didn’t want her to be ridiculed, plus she could not write or even hold anything because of all the extra skin.
Diamond was 27 years old when she finally completely filled in her skin. By then she was as white as a sheet of paper and it seemed that she would stay that way.
It was still two years later before Dave came back to see them. It was the first time that Diamond had seen him in person, though she had talked to him over the phone a few times. When he did come back Julia agreed to let him move in with her. But he never could get close to Diamond even though she looked normal now. And because of this, Diamond never got along with him, and Julia was never as close to him as she once had been. She thought that it was cruel of him to deny Diamond a father simply because she had been born different.
So far there has never been another baby born like Diamond.
