  Do something crazy different from what you do now. For me, it would be to pack up and move to africa or a third world country for a few weeks as an outreach project. For you, it could be just to reach out to someone next door.

  @Rickro: Perfect! I’m glad I had my setup right the first time. Now I’ll just have to kill my DHCP server on the AP and things should be normal and working, based on what I read around the web.

  Oh, I forgot to add, the AP is strictly an Access Point, takes a WIRED signal from the router and broadcasts over the air. It is not a wireless repeater, but I see your point of view. If it’s a repeater, you’re 100% correct, in my case, I could use the AP with a different SSID and privacy and not cause any trouble. The problem is, I need both to be the same, so that any of our authorized users can easily connect to either end of the large meeting space we’re trying to cover.

  @Rickro: that does help, thanks. I decided to separate the wireless channels because the output range of the two devices overlap by 30-50% and I want the devices to connect to the strongest AP. The router end is the one that leads to the internet, and the AP is connected to the back of the router. There are no cordless phones around, but my location is near a busy (wirelessly-speaking) neighborhood and we need to avoid several ‘default’ channels form other routers.
