iPod can play on MP4 and H.264 video, I don’t think you can make iPod play AVI video.
What I know is convert the avi to ipod compatible video, then you can add the video to iTunes and sync it to iPod. If you don’t know how to convert video, I think this guide would help you

iPod supports only mp4 and h.264 video, you have to convert your movie to iPod compatible video at first, then make a playlist on iTunes, add the converted video to the playlist, plug in your iPod to computer, then sync your iPod with iTunes, done.
