  The 7mm is quite a rifle inside 300 yards. Hopefully those barnes bullets will solve your problem with that 257. It has truly been a joy for me, and it was a hard sell on me as I grew up in the .308 cartridge in the USMC, and spent a lot of my ultra long range time on the 300 WinMag. I’m on that quest for the perfect .338 Lapua now personally. Looking to break the 1000 meter range reliably on deer and antelope. Best of luck to you in your quarter bore endeavors Dr. Ralph.

  Remember the .257 Wby Mag is a tremendously powerful and deadly cartridge, with a great deal more kill power than the 30-06, but due to velocities with frangible projectiles, will be less effective 75 yards than the 30-06, and far more effective and generally (with quality ammo/equipment) than the 30-06 from the 100-600 yard range.

  Inside 50 yards, the .257 Wby is still traveling at velocities that exceed the function velocities of ballistic projectiles. Shot placement becomes key, and the shoulder blade of deer and antelope should be avoided due to the possibility of bullet splatter. I average around six pronghorn and 3 mule deer per year with my Model 700 chambered in .257 Wby Mag, and most shots are taken between 150 meters and 450 meters. I have found this a tremendously deadly cartride, in fact with ballistic tips the damage done to the animal borders on the unacceptable. I usually use handloaded match grade Sierra HPBT. Once using this projectile of course once again placement becomes vital. I have yet to see a run-off with this cartridge, and in truth it has as much energy factory loaded than many factory loaded 300 WinMags under 300 yards. Perhaps at the short ranges purchasing ammunition loaded with barnes triple shock projectiles would be your best answer.
