  It doesn’t work. This site proves that it doesn’t work. The idea is that if everyone goes after their own happiness without worrying about anyone else, we’ll have a more just and generally happier society. The highest moral good is achieving your own happiness.
  
  We need each other’s help. There’s no getting around that. You can be as individualistic as you want but you’re still a social creature and in the end you’re gonna find out that you can’t do it on your own.
  
  And I suppose this is more of an opinion thing, but I just think there’s something disgusting about a person who thinks unconditional love is wrong.

  I don’t know if I’m the average student but I know what the effect was on me…a student in a relationship gets distracted much more easily. Especially in the early stages of the relationship, you never really stop thinking about that one special person, and so even when you’re “focused” half your brain is somewhere else.
  
  A student may lose their motivation towards studies because the only thing that seems important is this person. So not only is it hard for them to focus, but they don’t particularly feel like trying either.
  
  The student’s priorities and time management skills get jumbled as they start making time for this person in their life. They have less time to study because they spend more time out with their new significant other.
  
  All of these factors can cause slips in a student’s grades, but as the relationship progresses and the student gets used to this extra person in their life, they can generally bring the grades back up. They sort their priorities out again, remember whatever it was that motivated them in the first place, and realize that it is not vastly important to the relationship to keep this person in their thoughts while trying to do Calculus.
  
  That’s based on experience, but I’m sure it’s a bit different for each student and relationship.

  You may not need to know calculus but you do need to know how to solve problems. You may not need to know history but you do need to learn from past mistakes. You may not need to understand Shakespeare or remember every grammar rule, but you do need to learn how to express, interpret, and formulate ideas.
  
  Doing schoolwork still sucks. It still feels pointless and there are probably better ways to learn these things. But it isn’t wasted time, you are gaining valuable life skills whether you realize it or not. At least, that’s what I tell myself when I’m sick of math problems :P

  Four of my good friends are self-harmers. For three of them, it is the only way they know how to cope and whenever a problem arises they can’t resist. For one, who is bipolar, it is everything. Her release from pain, her way to control her manicness or depression, something to do when she is bored, angry, scared, anything. All of them, to a degree, are addicted. All of them could do other things to solve their problems. And all of them, no matter how I beg, or have them try alternatives, or try to be there for them, always go back.
  
  When I hear the words “self harm” It’s like the scars are on my heart instead of their bodies. I care about them so much and want them to feel loved and treasured and happy, I want them to be able to solve their problems, to be able to cope with their emotions. And I wonder about just how deep they go, and if they will ever stop going deeper, and if one day they’ll slip or underestimate their strength and I’ll lose them forever.
  
  But I also think of another thing that is very important. They told me about their self-harm, and while I understand it is a very difficult thing to do, it saved me. When I met them, I had my ups and downs but I generally enjoyed life. As time passed and my challenges grew greater I went through my own numb spells. I knew what I could do to start feeling again. But I also knew where it would get me, the addiction, the pain I would cause my friends, the serious injury I could do to myself. So I learned to cope in other ways. Those of you who do self-harm, your stories are incredibly important. Don’t be afraid to speak up. People need to know about this issue before they find themselves unable to cope. If everyone spoke up, self-harm could be prevented rather than treated.
  
  So that’s what I think of. And I want to wish all of you battling this addiction the very best of luck. You’ll be in my prayers.

  I think life gets harder but we also get stronger…don’t you remember when you were little and that first person teased you and you were so heartbroken? Don’t you remember when you skinned your knee for the first time and you cried and cried? The experiences get more painful as life goes on but we also learn how to deal with them, little by little.
  
  For a four year old with a skinned knee, life is not easy. But we envy his position because we could handle his situation better than he can.

  He(it is just one guy, not a band) is kind of my life right now. You might know Fireflies because its been on the radio a lot…but there are even better songs like “Tip of the Iceberg” and “The Bird and the Worm”.

  Haha well its not sympathy I’m after but I guess its something just as pointless and stupid to request.
  
  I am basically after an instruction manual. Tangible things I could actually put into practice. The ten steps to becoming a genuine person, or something. ha.
  
  Because in the world of the student there are clear cut directions for everything. Just another way I am disconnected from reality I guess. Would it help if I learned how to write my own manual for once?

  Well I like the drinking idea simply because I know I could actually pull it off.
  
  Thep I know all that but I don’t know how to do it. I don’t seem able to say “Ok self, just be who you are. No more pretending.” I hardly realize when I’m doing it sometimes.
  
  And I know what I like. I like horseback riding, writing, stargazing, dancing, music, I could go on. Knowing that doesn’t make me any more honest, any more real. I could pick on of those and make myself a new fake out of it, like being The Writer. But other than that I don’t see how these things could change anything.
