I grew up in a strictly religious home where fundamental doctrine was the ultimate authority. Church services up to 9 times a week drilled into my head what was right and wrong, black and white, acceptable and unacceptable. Questioning an adult on problems would result in a rehashing of facts from the Bible that had already been told to me year after year in a Christian school and church. The facts were vivid in my head and from a young age I was able to give an educated response to religious question, but I was never taught how to apply it in the real world. Instead, the details were always presented in a hypothetical and idealistic Christian vacuum of circumstances. The beginning of my childhood was great because I knew nothing apart from it. However, in the final years of high school, I discovered that some of my thoughts and desires did not match up with how I was supposed to act. Any effort to get questions answered resulted, not in personalized help as a friend, but condemnation and basically threats to change or my life would be ruined. I quickly learned that I would have to figure out my own answers. Finally, the unspeakable became clear. I was gay. I was exactly what I had heard preached against for more than 1 1/2 decades. It took years to sort through my issues and quite frankly they aren’t all worked out but I have become confident in who I am and have a clear sense of myself. I have distanced myself from religion because it did nothing but hurt my situation. I don’t suggest that for everyone but for my case it became necessary. My purpose for getting on this site is simply to help someone who might be struggling with being gay or really any deviation from strict religious rules, but no one is willing to take time to talk with them about it. I know how that feels and it’s so painful. There may be betters ways to reach that end but I thought this site was a good start. So let me know if I can help. =-)
