  Don’t underestimate the power of a good listener but the value is listening doesn’t really hold true for big group situations. So, if you want to get noticed and be regarded as fun loving then you need to lead the conversation, start new topics if things die down a little, start getting into the same TV programmes as everyone else, watch films (every student I know what loads of tv and films and talked about them a lot).
  
  Or…..be yourself and find new people to hang out with. I made some great friends who were actually interested in having a more serious conversation, about work, politics, world news etc.

  Cheer up, nobody is worthless. I have felt pretty low on several occasions despite the fact that I am financially ok because, as cliche as it sounds, it is not all about money or possessions.
  
  But, you say you are skilled with your hands doing manual work and this is one area where it is possible to start working for yourself. Asking your parents to help you out may be hard but it’s not wrong, they are your parents and want to see you succeed. Get a decent set of tools, do some jobs locally for people you know, friends of your parents, whoever. Then you are starting to build up a portfolio of work done and good references obtained which will allow you to look for work in the wider community as trust is established through good references when you work in such a trade.
  
  Stick with the college if this is going to lead to a job you actually want to do or risk it and go it alone….I did and it’s one of the best decisions I ever made.
