I hope you’re through with your essay by now, but here’s a tip for future moments like this:
– it helps to know, that you are drawn away from any more or less complicated task because of “perfectionism”. I.e. people are always afraid to do something “imperfect”, that’s the way we’re raised by parents – a lot of them won’t accept anything but an “A”, sometimes even that isn’t enough and we’re required to get “A+” to receive some love. So when we grow up, it’s a lot easier for us to call ourselves a “failure” and live with that, than to be “not good enough” in what we do.
On a more practical note, if you have a task that should be done but you find yourself drawn away from it, you can try the following technique:
– just do the task for 30 mins, and don’t filter your work, i.e. just put down what comes to mind, be it brilliant idea or real garbage — just don’t try to classify as “good”/”bad” at all. Then go play for some time, and try to repeat these 30 min sessions as needed — at some point you mind find yourself a lot closer to completion than to putting it off and the task will be completed. - written 4 days, 22 hours ago
My personal interpretation of the phrase is knowing how to stay, or at least appear busy at your desk. I immediately thought of the expression: “The devil finds work for idle hands.”
