I don’t have advice, but I would like to say that I relate. I’m 23 years old, just finished a masters in Creative Writing. Writing is my ultimate dream, but I have to do something to survive in the meantime. I’m really freaked out about what comes next once I finish my portfolio. Because of the recession and sky-rocketing unemployment, there aren’t any jobs around. There also don’t seem to be many jobs around out there for creative people.
It’s stressing me out big time - I hate office jobs and the like and the idea of spending the majority of my time stuck in one is soul destroying. I’d rather be penniless in a job that I at least enjoyed than be raking cash in through a job that not only makes me unhappy, but eats into time that I could spend pursuing my passions.
I know I don’t have answers here, which is sort of what you’re looking for, but I just wanted to say that I understand how unpleasant it feels not to know where you’re going, to cast your mind ahead by a couple of months and see only a thick blanket of fog (I found your comment by googling ‘help, I feel lost’, so you’re not alone). I always found it at least comforting to know I’m not the only one floating around out there.
It might be worth your while booking an appointment with a good careers advisor/counselor. They could point you in the right direction at least in terms of education and training for the type of job you’re interested in, if not showing you what/where opportunities are available for creative types.
I’d also agree with the advice of anonymous about finishing your degree. Finishing a qualification is not only a very satisfying experience, but it opens up more doors for you and makes you eminently more employable.
