  the dot technique can work as well, i have tried similar techniques but i prefer to meditate with my eyes closed. It’s just a matter of personal preference

  look for information on the practice of “zazen” which is the central meditation practice of zen buddhism. It is a very basic practice and can be done by anyone of any religious affiliation.
  
  essentially you sit upright in a comfortable position and just breathe. you attempt to “watch” yourself breathe and not to focus on any of the thoughts that will inevitably come up.
  
  don’t worry if this is difficult at first. even if it is, the practice is still very rewarding.
  
  some people will advise beginners to count their breaths from one to ten and then start over. you can try this if you like, but i have always found that it’s easier just to allow myself to breathe and follow the breath as it enters and leaves my body.
  
  when i feel thoughts begin to pull me in a certain direction i just return to my breath. eventually i don’t have to think about breathing, and i really just watch my body inhale and exhale.

  if worrying is a constant problem for you, you may also want to look into therapy. I have seen wonderful results after seeing a therapist for the past 6 months, and there’s no shame in asking for help when you need it.
