  It’s terrible what happened to tapdancer’s parents but drinking AND DRIVING is not the same as just drinking. I disagree about the catch-all attitude that all they do is harm and hurt. Blanket statements and attitudes like that serve to alienate you and your stance from those who need to hear about irresponsibility and carelessness. Much like telling teens that abstinence is the ONLY way, you are not going to win over very many teens with that attitude. I’d rather meet in the middle so at least then there is a dialogue where maybe I can persuade someone to my side as opposed to screaming at him/her from afar where I have almost NO chance of getting through. How many people are saved by the street preacher screaming damnation on the corner in the wee hours? I think the effect of something like this is 1) People tune the person out and 2) assume they are nuts.

  The trust is the big thing. As far as your views on smoking, drinking and drugs. I’m not trying to change your mind because these are all vices. However, it’s somewhat strange to have such a dramatic view on these things alone so I am trusting that you take your health very seriously and hate to see poor/overeating, sedentary lifestyles, etc.
  
  There is a stigma attached to smoking, drinking and drugs and maybe that plays into your strong views on these things. I never smoked, drank or did any drugs my entire life up until I turned 30. Then I started drinking socially. I’ve still never done drugs or smoked, the latter I find disgusting and bothersome. However, if you are merely drawing the line at a safe point I can understand and respect that.
  
  But maybe there is something else at work here. At your age, there is a social aspect to the drinking and drug use. It’s a peer pressure thing still and people often do things because they’re cool or because they finally can get away with them or because it makes them feel like they fit in somewhere or have a sense of belonging. (People are insecure especially the younger we are.) I mean who starts smoking because it’s AWESOME:no one because it’s immediately nasty.
  
  You would have a valid point to wonder what effect the pot has on her while she is high. It would be one thing if she smoked out with you rather than with other people while you’re not around. What ELSE was she doing with them that she wouldn’t want you to know about? It IS a mind-altering substance.
  
  I imagine you asked her WHY she smokes. I’d be curious to find out what she says. I hope it’s not the classic: “I don’t know. People were doing it; I just felt like it.” That would make you feel good wouldn’t it? That she knowingly betrayed you for such a ho-hum reason. Then there is also the idea that she knows how strongly you feel about it and sometimes it just feels good to do something you KNOW is wrong, in which case, I would be totally pissed about that too.
  
  At any rate, if you were to give her another chance, I wouldn’t blindly trust her. Just know that this is who she is and you’d be a fool to aassume she is going to change overnight. Go out with her again but don’t trust her like you once did. She will feel that coldness and distance and if she cares will do something about it. [Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.]
