  It is not the heart itself that dies, but the physical body begins to shut down and grow weaker. The soul and mind are intertwined, and it begins to realize there is not a need for living, so the body will respond in kind, often in the subconscious realm. Loss and misery, in strong enough doses or prolonged over time, will affect our physical self.
  
  As for how long or how heartbroken one must be? This is relative to the host of the heart.
  
  Whether one is in such pain that they make a conscious decision to end their lives, become stricken with mental illness that brings them closer to death, engage in a more risky lifestyle or reckless behavior, or on a deep and subsconscious level, the body overrides its basic function to breathe and pump blood for our survival and allows itself to weaken… yes, a broken heart of enough suffering and magnitude can kill you.
