I agree an anti-virus is always a good idea.
Also, you can restrict the level of use your son can have on the computer. By default I imagine he has administrator privilages, which means he can run/install anything. This means any cd’s he puts in can run/install anything.
Changing this to a reduced/limited user means that he will be able to use the computer normally, however he will need to log in as an administrator to install the program, and then can go back to his safer ‘limited’ setup.
A quick overview of these “user profiles” can be found here: http://help.expedient.net/general/winxp_profiles.shtml
or by searching online.
If you have a look and think this is a good idea, please try, and if you have trouble implementing these then feel free to start another post with any questions.
Regards,
Mitch.

What doesn’t work? Are you trying to run java games?
go to your command prompt (i don’t know how ME is set up but in XP you go to Start>>run>> typ in “cmd”
type in “java -version” and tell us what prints out there.

A lot of key loggers have a key-combo that will bring up the main screens (well the commercial ones) and is normally something like ctrl+alt+shift+(any keyboard key)
I would recommend just trying all sorts of keyboard combo’s, you might get lucky.

Many laptops seem to have overheating problems, including my toshiba A30. There is a way with the A30 (I don’t know what brand you have) of removing all the crud that stops the air flowing as well. I found that mine only over heated when it was plugged in, and worked fine if you only had battery power. Do you find similar? If so, i would recommend giving it a clear out. A hoover over the air vents is a crude but mostly acceptable method of removing some of the crud… well it can be - doesn’t hurt to try!
