  How to Walk to School (safely)
  
  This is for all of you who make the trek out of their comfortable air-conditioned apartment, onto the streets of Winter Park. It can be difficult with the sun beating down on you and the unpredictable variables of walking along side a busy road. But with these directions, you can make that three-mile plus walk a lot easier.
  
  
  The first and most important step to walking to school is getting ready. You have to be prepared for anything that could happen along the way, and for certain conditions. Asking yourself “Do I have everything that I need for the day?” could save you a lot of time and energy. If you have to walk back and grab something you forgot, you could risk being late or extremely exhausted, not to mention frustrated. Another crucial thing to remember is sunscreen. All that direct sunlight is not good for our skin, so if you burn easily make sure to apply some SPF and bring that water bottle.
  
  
  After leaving your place of living the next step would be to put your headphones in your ears and pick a great song to listen to. You can even make a playlist so you do not have to keep taking out your mp3 player the whole time. Pick music that is upbeat, that way it will make the time you are walking to school go by faster. If you do not have anything to listen to music from, try calling someone on the phone. You will find that a proper distraction fuels your energy and stamina to walk. Just make sure to still be aware of your surroundings, no matter how groovy your music is.
  
  That being said, there are a handful of variables you should take into consideration on the walk to school. Your first precaution should be finding the nearest sidewalk. This might not sound too important, but when fleets of cars are coming at you on the side of the road, you will be wishing you were on that sidewalk. Once you find your designated sidewalk, stick to one side of it, rather than walking in the middle. This will ensure that you won’t be hit by a fast moving bicycle and leaves room for passerby’s. Always be aware of the people you come in contact with. You do not have to be paranoid, just cautious that an angry bum could come out of nowhere at a moments notice. Choosing public walkways and keeping a steady pace will almost guarantee a safe walk.
  
  On your way, you may find that you have to cross the street in order to reach your destination. This can be a tricky situation at best, so listen to these foolproof steps carefully. First, you need to find a crosswalk. Sometimes it’s easier said than done, with very few in this general area. Once you have found one, approach it and press the button under the traffic post to cross to the other side. Now here comes the hardest part: wait. Crosswalks can take over five minutes to give you that little white walking man, and you may find yourself becoming extremely inpatient. If for some reason the post is not giving you the O.K. to go, you may have to watch for traffic in order to cross. This can be dangerous, so therefore I do not recommend it. Your best bet would be to find another working crosswalk. Either way, hope for the best and walk brusquely to the other side.
  
  With these easy tools and tips, walking to school can be just as much of a good experience as any other form of transportation.
