• (3 votes) I’m more or less 16 and I’ve been having an affair with my history teacher for about a year now.
  

  So you love this man so much you will happily destroy his career.
  
  First what I sense is two people revelling in an unprofessional, unhealthy, power relationship. How flattering, moral boosting, ego inflating it must be for him to have a young lover and a pupil at that! The danger! The Excitement! And how flattering, ego boosting and thrilling for you this must be. And look you have the power to destroy him professionally. And of course you want that power. Any 16 year old would revel in having power over an adult.
  
  BUT you can be forgiven. You are a child. You have no real power especially over your emotions (eg the moral judgement aras over the human brain develop in our late twenties)
  
  Your teacher is a disgrace to his profession and should loose his job for abusing his position of power and the glamour (in the magical sense) that power possess.
  
  In the UK teachers act in loco parentis (in the place of the parents) so its a bit like he has decided to make love to his own daughter.
  
  I am sorry, I realise you must be excited by this relationship but I (a senior lecturer/professor (US)) am utterly appauled. Yes tell someone. tell your parents. tell his boss.

  Hey, I tried to help you on a post. But looking over masses of posts this just does not seem a site where people play a lot of computer games, math problems also tend to go unanswered, so maybe its not the right site for those kind of questions. Has anyone asked you to put on diapers? Are you spanked regularly by an older man? Are you looking for a super drink to make you into a thespian aerospace engineeer who fights of giant centipedes- those are issues that people are most at home with. Oh wait, have you kissed or bummed a male sleepover partner? No? oh well! Bye the way Your flashing skull did cause eyestrain :)

  I’ve not been banned (yet). Partly Dalek, I think everyone needs to recognise computer mediated communication lacks that paralinguistic cues (ie facial expression, tone of voice) that enable us normally to understand the meaning of what is being said. So short replies can sound terse or rude, for example. i’m not great at it. It also helps to treat people as genuine, unless proven otherwise.
  
  BTW I’ve been an Doctor Who fan since 1976, done some professional work in the area, so I know a bit….

  Sigh. So in the end, the inflamitory question that opened the post becomes, as was intended yet another post debating gun control.
  
  I have only a few observations;
  
  1) There is an overlap in the UK with the conflict between urban dwellers and those living in the countryside over issues of hunting. I grew up either side of the divide. For many I knew, hunting and shooting were and are a way of life. My own father was a master of the local (fox) hunt. guns had a role. I practiced clay pigeon shooting as a fore runner to shooting pheasent so I have some empathy with those Americans who see gun ownership as part of a way of life.
  
  2) What disturbs me is the way the pro gun members of this site have acted in the wake of Sandy Hook. At first there was silence. Much like the tobacco lobby ASH remain stratigically silent when anti-smoking research is published. Then we had a spurious series of posts that were, in the event, really a cover to advance pro gun ownership positions. Many of the observations and points made in favour of gun ownership were reasonable, but what disturbs me is the crass insensitivity, the lack of empathy, the sheer desire to advance a position at all cost and use any arguement available just to support owning a gun. Situations like the murder of children or the decision to abort a foetus occassion powerful emotions of sadness, loss and grief. “I want a gun!” isn’t even an emotion.
  
  3) there has been scant attention to the constitution. With good reason. The US constitution is a closed cannon, unalterable, sacred. But leaving the constitution untouched opens up an interpretative gap. What was really meant by its words. Were its writers really favouring a situation where children should have access to guns? Too much hinges on the interpretation of terms such as “the people”. Did this mean individual gun ownership for all? It seems not.
  
  4) But what strikes me as uniquely American is its citizens’ suspicion and fear of its own democratic process. The position that the government is out to get us on a daily basis, is paranoid in the extreme but also the forms of government intervention that are opposed seem highly selective. The role of gun ownership in the face of administrative, technocratic control seems questionable. Further, we have seen advanced here an incoherent position that advocates State intervention in the reproductive body of women (via opposition to abortion) while advocating guns as a means of freeing individulas from a totalitarian (sic) democratically elected government. Its useful to note that hatred of the US governement, fear of intervention has produced homegrown terrorism. And It is bizarre to imagine a world where pregnant women would be put in the position of having to shoot Doctors to protect their freedom from government control.
