Because humans are inherently looking for meaning. Life is in many cases burdensome and so we need an excuse to go through it, this excuse is our purpose or the meaning like we call it. We want to work but as long as we are rewarded or as long as we rest and so forth. but to a great part we are all unaware of ourselves and what we really want in life.
ok. now I think we are getting somewhere. (I’m assuming you’re talking about yourself.)
Life is not just burdensome, it’s downright painful. there is physical pain, emotional pain, existential pain. we have created gigantic industrial behemoths for the sole purpose of ignoring pain. our economy pretty much runs on pain. how many decision do you make throughout the day that aren’t in some way a response to pain?
however, calling life purpose an “excuse” to get through life is very cynical. right? to me, it feels like this is pain. hopelessness and cynicism is pain. (are we getting back around to the dream yet?) to me, it feels like you still want there to be a purpose. but the best you can muster at this time is a worm on a hook that you bait for yourself? sounds like a nightmare.
:)
And Jung and that branch of psychology is not only outdated but very mystical and un-scientific.
I don’t know if this is out-dated or not. but I do think that Jung is very influential. and his ideological perspective is very fascinating.
at any rate… what’s the point of all this? another human being is molting and perhaps emerging as something greater. if you don’t want to be midwife, fine, but don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

A human being has an ego, through which he experiences things,
depends on what you mean. isn’t the ego something which is itself experienced by the individual?
In our culture ego is thought to be our pride, but in psychoanalysis the ego is “I”, the structure through which we experience the outside world and be.
I’m not sure I see any difference there.
but don’t we experience the world through our senses?
and even if “I” is the structure… does it follow that it is necessary to experience life? (perhaps I’m just being tripped up by semantics here?)
We make our purpose, there is no specifics.. I am sure you made yours as well..
perhaps. but the questions is why do we think that life must have a purpose?

2012-07-28 11:45:55 on I really struggle and feel so angry with evangelical christianity and can’t resolve it in myself.
some people, in their effort to be righteous and godly, actually seem to be denying life and god.
good luck
This has caused me to reconsider many of my preconceptions, biases and beliefs.
good. here’s another one… a lot of people simply assume that life must have a purpose or that their life must have a purpose. but why do people think that life must have a purpose?

a dream is like a fish jumping up out of the water.
the question is how far down into the water will you follow it?

Im not saying to be a silent little barefoot submissive homeworker and just be a silent slave to him, what im saying is that when he sees how you are being genuinally nice to him, it would begin to melt his heart and perhaps begin to open his eyes to how he is treating you.
hahahahaha!

There is a massive drought right now in the US. global food prices will spike. famine and political unrest around the world are likely to follow.

2012-07-28 09:23:34 on Do you pray?
Nope. Well, not anymore.
When I was around 6-10 I used to pray by this little stream in the park. It was the only sacred place I knew. I never felt it was right to pray for myself though so I prayed first for my family then for the rest of the world.
It was an odd ritual but it did give me a mild comfort. I felt like I was communing with nature I bit.
perhaps you need to reconsider. the nature gods appear to be very unhappy right now
