Indeed, why would the government have anything to do with a religious and cultural ceremony anyways? Do we also have the right to a funeral and a Bar Mitzvah and a rite of passage through fire? And if so, do we get to redefine those ceremonies for our own purposes? People can go through what ceremonies they want. But redefining them takes away from the meaning some people would have of them. And some people take offense at that, and more so the more meaningful it is to them in their lives. For example, a funeral would be more neutral to do your own version of than a Bar Mitzvah. I am not married, so it doesn’t have much meaning to me yet. But I understand the sentiments of people who are against it for this reason.
But even if that wasn’t an issue for me, I cannot approve in any form of actions I consider harmful to people. Just as I cannot lie to a person and say that what they are doing is a good idea. I may leave people to their choices and their fate at times, but I will always seek to avoid enabling in the psychological meaning of the word. That is the heart of the issue for me.
Here’s my viewpoint, Marlin: if you’re born a woman, or born black, or born white–that’s it. You have no choice in the matter. But we’re not talking about how you were born in this instance; we’re talking about a choice, about a chosen behavior.
And we’re not even talking about Big Brother in the bedroom. Nobody wants to monitor anybody’s sexual habits.
It’s just that when some people ask for sanctioning of what other believe isn’t right that we run into a problem!
I do not condemn anyone; but neither can I say that I believe something should be sanctioned when that’s not my belief!
Well, Marlin, I’d say that the majority of Americans do not support gay marriage, if their voting to ban it in such states as California is any indication–and California is undoubtedly our most “liberal” state.
I could see a necrophile hiring a medium to “channel” the spirit of the dead person, and perhaps an animal psychiatrist saying that the goat gave his or her assent to marriage.
And then there’s the people who’d want to marry their mothers, or their fathers, or their brothers or their sisters . . . all consenting adults, mind you! WHY stop them when they say, “That’s the way I was born. I can’t help it–so accommodate me!”
You see, Marlin, it really does open Pandora’s box!
I think I’ll go back and argue further maybe, but I think it is less okay to do that if I might hurt you or rile you up. I feel like I do have more to contribute though. We’ll see. Thanks for accepting my apology.
I have a right to get married to the person I love (and I did) and I think others should have that right too. why should the government intrude into such a personal decision?
if civil unions provide the same legal framework as marriages… ie, then to me they’d have the same rights. but then why do we need to have two different legal terms to describe something which is the same? that doesn’t sound very logical. did you know that in some states they actually do not provide the same rights?
That would make sense. Except I don’t consider marriage in general a civil right but a political issue. If a person wants to be recognized by the government as married a civil union would suffice. It would be quite simple, but one group refuses to settle for anything less but the same terminology, and the other group does not want its cultural and religious ceremonies to have their meanings changed.
To be honest, I suspect ulterior reasons for gay marriage being as big of an issue as it is. PETA similarly seems to make a big issue about vegetarianism. I have no problems with vegetarianism, but I wonder what’s behind their stated reasons, as I wonder with gay marriage. At the moment I suspect in both cases that it’s a desire to create a protected minority that has a greater influence in the political world.
I apologize for accusing you of obsession and for the overall confusion in our argument =)
The latter I did not fully cause, although I still could have done better. But the former was entirely my fault. I must admit I was losing my patience more than I should have been.
Well, Marlin, here’s the thing: necrophiles, pedophiles and zoophiles will use the same argument: “This is my sexual orientation. I was born this way. You need to accept it and let me marry the dead person/child/goat that I want to.” Why shouldn’t we open up marriage to these groups if we open it up to gays?
I didn’t see your last shout until I had already sort of apologized in a post. Help has been so slow for me that I haven’t been able to see anything but your shout since I posted my last chick-fil-a comment, but now that I know how you feel, I feel like that apology certainly won’t suffice. I don’t know whether any that i can offer will, but I thought I should let you know that I thought because you are so playful and persistent in prodding other people’s beliefs, you wouldn’t get hurt so easily. I know that my calling you hypocritical was completely uncalled for and it had no place at all in the conversation. I truly did not intend to hurt or upset you in any way. I know most of it probably comes from the fact that I, who you considerately invited to that post and thought would be civil and thoughtful would say something so cruel. I guess it didn’t register with me that although you are persistent, you take care never make any unfair accusations or call people names. I really was being playful and didn’t intend for any of this. I’ll report my comment as soon as I can get the page to load, I’m sorry, and that’s the best I can do. Forgive me or don’t. I’ll carry on thinking you’re a funny, thoughtful guy either way.
I understand and am very happy that you sent me a shout instead of a reply or I might have felt to intimidated to answer back. Thank you for the nice conversation as well. :)
okay, well this mini conversation was very interesting, but have a good nights sleep :) good night!
and I don’t think the christian religion needs to change, because it’s centered around God and the bible, and those two things don’t change.
I think the part that needs to change is the people.
just my opinion…good night, again :) maybe well discuss this some other day!
true! humans must adapt (change) to survive. and as people, we must learn to change ourselves personally to become better as people, so being perfect is in fact completely impossible for us in our life times. But I always say, “There is room for improvement.” it’s just when we stop trying to be better, stop pushing ourselves, that’s when we’re stuck.
No, no I understand you didn’t mean anything rude or mean or anything to me personally, or anyone, I totally didn’t get that from you at all!
What you said though, that to you christian was “a bad word” just totally inspired me. Because I always thought of it like that too, but now I’m trying to accept it more, because I will never be a “perfect” Christian. I can just try my hardest and be honest, I guess. And maybe that will be good.
Okay :) I really don’t think I’ll understand this opposition to gay marriage except for people wanting others to be exactly like them and no other way.
Two great sayings are, “If you don’t like gay marriage, then don’t get gay-married.” and “Claiming that someone else’s marriage is against your religion is like being angry at someone for eating a doughnut because you’re on a diet.”
Actually I felt my comment offended you and you were only seeking to get into a debate! I’m not on here to get into debates on someone’s belief’s! Period!
I did not ignore you either….you just did not get the response you wanted!
Oh, no! I think that this is a large deal that should be dealt with, but I just don’t understand how people are only outraged with this one company. I’m a very big equality-for-everyone person, so I’m sorry to have come across that way. Here’s an example of an article about other companies: http://www.policymic.com/articles/108… I don’t mean that we should ignore this company, but that there should really be press for more companies other than this obvious one.
lol ! the person who told me that idiom was from UK but i didn’t understand what she said.
i asked an American person about that and he said just as you “masturbate for me “
but she told me : i didn’t mean that.
you’re totally right… different between British and American. i hate British Accent.
for example they say Watee instead of water.
British don’t have ” R”
I value education very much. but it has become too expensive here in the USA. there are other ways to become “learned” without university, but it is harder to do so.

Yes yes I know about the entire situation and haven’t been living in an onlookers cave for the duration of this. A point I’m trying to make is that everyone is making an uproar over this because it’s news at the moment. No one is taking the time to bother with other companies even larger than Chick-fil-a that are just as guilty.
i completely believe you…i can’t really write my logic bcz i can’t use logical terms into English.i understand what you mean and also understand logic.you are good at this.
God bless you
thanks for comparing your good ideas.

i agree with you…a philosophy rule says that”if you don’t believe universe exist you can’t believe that god exists”–>we Infer to god by Creatures,Creatures are a sign that god exist.
this is all i wanted to tell
