2007-12-27 11:27:48 on Hi, I recently graduated with a Bachelors degree in a major that I can do nothing with.
Kosingl. . . .I agree with the positive thinking but quite frankly I have had a few non-employment related discoveries that have really put a damper on things. I would not discourage going to college, I think it is an experience everyone should have but I would suggest leaving with a marketable skill even if it is something like welding, something you can use to actually make survivable money while you find something real which can take eons. And a monkey could go to school for business management you need to add finance, international finance, realestate, hospital administration something so that you actually have a specialty. General degrees in business get you stuck managing a retail store or resturant. I would also start now, as in today right now looking for internships in your chosen field of interest. Even at 45 you are starting over with a different area of expertise and you have a whole bunch of life experience which wil make you a better candidate. Most companies start now looking for people to hire in June. Now if I knew then what I know now things would be much better. Also never listen to your college advisor they didnt graduate from preschool. Join student organizations and professional organizations and that is the best way to learn about how to make yourself marketable and take the appropriate classes with the good professors.
2007-12-17 21:52:55 on What do you do when you are 30 years old and your life is going to pot?
I have a BS in biology and physics. . . tons of research experience. .. . . grrr
2007-12-17 12:00:03 on What do you do when you are 30 years old and your life is going to pot?
I’ve done the craig’s list thing. . . . and I usually keep an excel file of where I’ve applied, when I called or visited, which resume I sent them, who I talked to, etc. and any other details. And I don’t know if I can really sit there and say I’ll work for a dollar less. . . honestly wages top out around $10 in Boise, ID. . . But I’ve been a TON of places just about everything you could possibly come up with to tell me to do I’ve already done or currently am doing. The truth is the economy all over the country is poor and its the new graduates that really feel that more than anything. I’m not the only one. I have 2 friends with biochemistry degrees and years of research experience .. one of them cleans houses for a living the other one works at a Jimmy Johns. You end up having to go back and get a MA or PhD because the BA/BS is the new high school diploma . . and with the extra $100K in debt you then compete with hundreds of people for a job that pays about $15/hr and you end up waiting tables on the weekends to make ends meet anyway.
2007-12-15 16:29:47 on What do you do when you are 30 years old and your life is going to pot?
I’ve been registered with Manpower for 3 years now and I call them ALL the time. . . .they are useless. The only way you are going to get a job these days is if you know somebody. And the whole apply online thing is a sham it just means its easier to throw away your resume without even considering it because most places only post jobs because legally they have to, they already have in mind who they are going to hire before they even post the job.
2007-12-13 19:15:32 on Why can’t we all get along?
yea you know . . . I have to say that in circumstances where it is a church or any volunteer effort where there is no consequence for lack of commitment to something. . . its a problem. The challenge as a leader is to either create consequences or create rewards greater than their efforts. . . but that is REALLY annoying.
2007-12-13 19:08:47 on Physics question big test tomorrow please help.
OK ready. . . Impulse is the integral of force over time and is measured in Newton seconds. . .
eg. . one newton of force over one second will change the momentum. . . a force of 3 newtons over a half of a second, etc. etc etc…
so for rigid body collisions we apply an infinite force over a very small time frame. . . this way the impluse is = the change in momentum of the colliding objects.
Newtons third law applies. . . and the impulse on the colliding objects will be equal and opposite.
I dont have a symbol function on this thingy so I cant write you an equation but you should ahve an impluse vector equation in your book.
So when a car collides with an object it recieves X amount of force. . . which then creates a shock that travels up the elecrical system of the vehicle (depending on what type of system it is) and releases an airbag.. this occurse over an infantecimal amount of time. . . x amount of force/ time creates this reaction. . along with the general reaction of either coming to a complete halt or bouncing back.
INSIDE THE CAR: an object in motion stays in motion. When the car collides it comes to a halt, in some cases it hits so hard that it bounces back in the direction it came at the collided object. When the airbag is deployed due to this collision the individual driving the car is still moving forwards. The airbag basically inflates for the sole purpose of absorbing the impact of the still moving body inside the car. Upon impact there are seams on the side of the airbag which burst and deflate. Firstly absorbing the impact and secondly deflating so that the person has room to breathe and hopefully walk away from the accident.
As far as impulse theory goes there are two stories to discuss. .. the initial impact of the vehicle, and the impact of the individual driving onto the airbag, and you could possibly argue the force of the individual being pushed back into their seat after the airbag deploys. . .but they probably arent looking into too much detail with that.
Impulses have similar laws to forces. . because they are time integral forces. . .(forces over time f/t) every impulse has an equal and opposite impulse. . . you can either do this linearly or rotating. . in your case I think the linear method is probably what you would go for .. . and you can calculate motion from an impulse if you know the initial velocity . . .
The important thing in that is that the linear motion will be in the same direction as the impulse even if the impulse is applied at an offset point from the center of mass. . . its kind of counterintuitive but thats the hard part about impulses. . .
I hope this helps really I need to be there and draw you a picture.
2007-12-13 18:53:50 on Why can’t we all get along?
I get pretty irritated when people make their drama and stress your problem. It happens all the time, a customer comes in to a resturant or office and wants something done such and such a way right away. . . and everyone is on their way out to go home for the night and then throws a temper tantrum about not getting the service they desire.
I hate gossiping, especially when people who don’t even know you at all are doing it to you behind your back simply because they lack anything else to do and they feed off of chaos to get through their days.
I don’t like it when people hang up on you or refuse to take your phone calls. I think that is an extremely controlling and abusive tactic to gain the upperhand in a situation.
My roommate is from New Zealand. . . it really bothers me that everywhere we go we get stopped by some person or another going wow you are from New Zealand I took a vacation there blah blah blah. . .. he’s from another country, yes they have telephones, bicycles, cars, mcdonalds and computers there. . . . move on from it. About the only thing different about this guy is that he’s obsessed with american flag belt buckles. . The accent is annoying not sexy try living with him :)
2007-12-13 18:48:14 on ok another problem people its bout me havin my baby
I agree with Orion. . . .and I’m a fairly brash person, don’t take that the wrong way Im that way with everyone. . but it definitely seems to me that you need a wakeup call badly. And sometimes it takes people like me and probably your dad to stick it to ya until you figure it out. It isn’t just you that you have to worry about anymore and your baby deserves the best you can give it. IF you are too busy worrying about being in your own house just so you can do whatever you want, you aren’t thinking about that baby first. And if your father is so adamant about you not being with your boyfriend you should probably reevaluate his positive and negative traits before you start getting ideas about moving in with him. Trust me there is nothing worse than baby’s daddy drama to ruin your life. And guys that age rarely want to just settle down, and even if they act like it, it won’t last long. . . .
2007-12-13 12:35:58 on Important please watch my video that i made
I just want everyone here to know that I just had an abortion for the same reasons you are fighting this battle. In fact I had 2 of them for the same reason, the same guy and my inability to escape. You are aboslutely right the abusers end up having more rights than the victim and the worst part is if you retaliate in any way YOU wind up in jail instead of him. . . . It was easier to sleep with him than to get slapped around.
He almost killed me, literally. I have to have a stabilizing rod put in my neck after what he did to me and the police didn’t even file the report. AND they locked me up for 4 days instead of going after him. . . they did not secure any of my belongings while I was locked up and the bastard broke in and destroyed my camera and all my files containing pictures of the things he’s done. He followed me to 3 states, his family was helping him do it to. . . which is the worst part. I was in a women’s shelter in Jackson hole and it really opened my eyes to the state of battered women. . . and how little rights they do have. I am 25 years old and if it is one thing my parents did right it was telling me that a woman can do all the same things a man can, just as well, just as strong and smart. I never realized just how much of a man’s world it really is out there. It has kind of destroyed me really. . . . I lost everything due to this abuser and it wasn’t like I didn’t up and leave. . While I was 3 months pregnant the bastard and his family put me out on the street and obtained a lawyer to try and take the baby away from me before it was even born. . . I lost it and just got an abortion. I couldn’t do what you are doing right now. I couldn’t leave my children with that man. . .
2007-12-13 12:16:48 on What do you do when you are 30 years old and your life is going to pot?
You know I have been out for just about a year and a half officially now. . . I have a degree in biology and physics. I had 2 good jobs lined up both of which lost their funding. I have been struggling to make ends meet all through college and now its like I’m sinking sinking. . sunk. I did demographics on different areas to just kind of pick a place and get out of Michigan (the economy is imploding) and I am in Boise, ID right now. It did have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country until this year. . . so now Im stuck in another place where I can’t find a job. ITs not like I’m not skilled I have a ton of great experience a professionally written resume, and you have to have money to be able to network I don’t even have enough money to eat on a regular basis much less go out and meet people.
2007-12-13 12:13:38 on I dont expect anyone to be able to help me or for that matter even care.
ok so we have a pretty similar life. . .and in my personal opinion if you don’t know what you are going to school for either quit while you are ahead or go with a marketable skill like teaching, nursing, welding even. . . don’t just keep going to school and racking up debt. I did that its a bad idea. And the dog thing too. I just had to give up my dogs. It was heartbreaking, Im still depressed about it. . just see if your vet will work with you, usually they are ok. If the dog doesnt need immediate attention you can always register with a veterinary school and you get put on a waiting list but it is free, usually they get to you within a few months.
2007-12-13 12:09:14 on What do you do when you are 30 years old and your life is going to pot?
Dude I’m right there with you. . . . and you have to have money to make money. I have a ton of medical debt and of course while I was going through all this medical crap I couldnt work very much and I have a ton of student loans too. . . Its embarassing, it took about 6 years to build up my life. . . and only one year to destroy it. Now I’m in a new city and I can’t get a job, I’ve been here almost 11 weeks and no work. . . I had to call home for the first time ever and ask for money. yuck. . . so when you figure it out let me know. I want to go back to my university and ask for a refund for my degree, it cost me a bunch of money and doesn’t appear to be helping me at all in the professional world.
2007-12-13 12:00:04 on well my daughter was sitting next to my dog and shes not sociel so she atact my daughter so now she has a big scare what do i do?
Well I grew up in a house with a lot of dogs, we had a lab chow we picked up at a dump when she was a puppy and she was a *****. . . no pun intended. If she was upset or uncomfortable she would just bite, no growling no warning. . . just bite. She had her spots around the house and no other dog or kid was allowed to occupy that space while she was there. . . My 2 sisters and I each had stitches from her at least once. Honestly if it were my child I’d probably find a different home for the dog without children because a dog, no matter how well trained, is an animal and unpredictable. On the other hand it did teach us to respect animals and my father is a doctor so the stitches were done on the kitchen table. . . We were all told not to mess with her at all and if we did as we were told there wasn’t a problem, Al never went out of her way to attack us it was only if we were teasing her, playing with her while food was present or kicking her out of her spots. So depending on the nature of the attack you could either keep the kid away from the dog, or you can get rid of the dog. .
2007-12-13 11:51:34 on ok another problem people its bout me havin my baby
I really feel like you should probably drop the angry teenager act and start working with your father. Realistically that is the healthiest safest thing you can do. . . the fact that he doesn’t want you to be with your boyfriend. . . and my apparent bias as to your ability to make intelligent decisions based on logical reasoning. . .you probably shouldn’t be with that guy. Most father’s don’t tell their daughters that they shouldn’t be with a man because they care, not because they are gaining something from the endeavor or they want to ruin their daughter’s life. Your father is a lot older and wiser, even if he does smoke in the house and it bothers you. . . and right now you need to focus on your baby and being everything for that child that you can not be for yourself. . . in only a few months. . you need to stop worrying about the boyfriend. If he wants to be there he will find a way to prove that, if he is going to be a drag and an obstacle forget him. .
2007-12-13 08:40:26 on Debate: Abortion?
punch in the face for “all the girls that go around getting pregnant and calously abort their babies every month or so”. . . .that is probably the single most ignorant statement Ive heard in a long time. . . and don’t think you are the only one who has been raped. I had a guy watch my house for weeks for when my parents weren’t home, break in my house beat the **** out of me and rape me. AND when I told my parents they pretty much kicked me out of the house. Kinda hard for a high school kid to deal with.
And I don’t care what country you are in. . . I am familliar with Canada’s processes I live real close by, don’t think that wasn’t a consideration. In fact I did go to two different Canadian clinics. . . all that psychological screening. . . they put you in a room with a patient advocate, they call them councelors but they might as well be the equivalent of a CNA. They talk to you about how you feel about the abortion, they have you fill out paper work. They ask you if anyone is forcing you to get an abortion and if you say yes they talk to you about it and sit there and say “Oh you don’t have to get an abortion if you don’t want to.” They have zero resources to be able to help protect you and the baby from a violent situation but they will sit there and say it’s your choice as if it is a legal requirement to say so. But unfortunately that is all they really do, they definitely dont spend more than 20 minutes with you. They don’t give you a full psychological workup. I actually had one clinic tell me I was crazy and that they wouldn’t work with me. . . . after I ran out of the clinic because I was so scared and upset having to wait there for 9 hours straight in a room full of women waiting to do the same thing, and this was supposed to be one of the better clinics.
The only difference between the Canadian clinic and the american clinics is there was a much longer wait to get into them and hence a lot of longer term abortions.
