It’s a funny feeling looking through an arrow loop. Imagine someone pulling into your driveway and, rather than finding an open garage door, they had 6 highly trained bowman aiming directly at their bodies from every direction. It was a place in which you really wanted to make sure your name was on the guestlist.
No apology needed… I LOVE history, and I love your knowledge of Richard III (I think that was the Lionheart, yes?) I swear in a past life, I spent many of hours on the uppermost turrets somewhere! lol
Richard, I am really sorry the ended up axing you most recent post. I got to use my history major and actually use the word “crenelation” in context. It was glorious. Welcome back, anyway.
Aye ~ I be Scottish, and love the historical re-enactment of 16th century. I’ve been combining the two now for years at Renaissance and High Game/Celtic festivals for year. There is actually from what I understand a very nice event in Long Beach at the Queen Mary every February. It is not a games to my understanding, just a Scottish Festival, so I’m not sure if they display any of the caber toss, hammer throw and the like. There is a Highland Games in Venturea; The Seaside Hightland Games, at Seaside Park - I’m not sure when that takes place… and if it’s not too much a trip for you… the Kern County Scottish Gathering and Games in Bakersfield is a pretty big affair.
I was surprised… of all the hundreds of games that my blood Clan attends across the USA and Canada, these were the only 3 that looked to be in southern CA (and Bakersfield I know is pushing it). Anyway, they are alot of fun (especially if you wear a kilt!) and I’m sure at one point in the year there is one in your area.

Richard, I had no idea your favourite sport was the caber toss! I’ve actually seen caber tossing - ashamedly in Winter Springs, FL - but it was an enjoyable time nonetheless. Fortunately, I ran into some friends from the UK and they were able to somewhat explain the rules. I can say that the women got quite a bit more applause than did the men when they were successful.
I also had the opportunity to see some Highland Games in Sterling, Scotland; however, I opted for a hike up the Wallace Monument, which is a trip that I highly, highly recommend (so long as you’re not objectionable to claustrophobic staircases.) Absolutely one of the most breathtaking views in Scotland - seeminlgy out of the pages of Tolkien himself.
In any event the , the Celtic Festival & Highland Games was one of the very few highlights of my tenure in the south and I suspect I shall miss the opportunity to attend in the future. Are you aware of any such festivals that take place in Southern California so that perhaps I could continue the tradition in the future?
Hey Rich. Good to see you back. May I ask where the church was you referanced in Kris10’s post? I’ve actually seen Sylvia Browne speak twice. My Mom’s a big fan. She writes a lot about her congregation in Campbell, CA, but I’ve never met anyone who’s been there.
that’s funny TJ… well… if I new how to set up a poll… I’d take a poll of the users (including mods and admins) I’m not not so sure it’s come out the way many might think.

Oh dear. That must have been a serious insult. On a blog, I once referred to a girl I worked with as… well, I’m not going to repeat it here, but it was laced with profanity. I didn’t think I’d every get over that one, but strangely, we ended up being roommates for a time. Life is funny.
lol… I told the Sr. vice Pres. Editor in chief of Cnet… they have till end of day Monday to apologize to me. Unless they ban me sooner… I’ll be here till then :)
Thank you TJ… I truly appreciate that. If I get the apology I asked Cnet for, then I can stay. Otherwise, a site with integrity is better for me. But the people in charge are already speaking about banning my name and IP.
Richard, I cannot access the link provided in your farewell shout; however, I sincerely hope that you are able to remain an active member of the help community. There are often times where the right actions are punished while the wrong ones are rewarded unfairly. Several years ago, my Mom lost a job to which she devoted a great deal of time and effort, after reporting the illegal activities of a coworker. What happened to her was hardly conscionable; however, in the end, she is a better person for having done the right thing. I hope that whatever offense you were given, you will not forget that you are needed by a far greater majority. My best wishes for your future. - TJ
thanks TJ… yes… many would say wiccian-christian or Druid-Christian is pretty much the same thing… and I suppose they are. There are some differences that I know about between the two ‘pagan religions’ but they are minimal. Well… except that in ancient days Druids were more respected. Witches have always gotten the short end of the stick, and that end was usually on fire! ;)
Bright blessings ~ Richard
Richard, one of the reasons that I “friended” you way back when is that there is always something about your posts that sounds oddly familiar, particularly as pertains to faith. Then, I noticed a comment about being Druid-Christian, which fell much in line with my suspicions. Interestingly, my Mom, (who’s largely responsible for my open-mindedness,) has always identified herself as a Wiccan-Christian, which I suppose is fairly similar. Thanks again for your perspective!
tj… please accept my apologies for a post that must have read completely or mostly unsympathetic… that was not really meant to be. My point is I for one concider what happened to you a blessing for the rest of us. I am so confident that your inner strength will / has return, and the light you have to give the world will brighter than you ever expected!
~Richard
Rich, I’ve seen your comments on quite a few postings and have really appreciated your insight and balance. I think it’s excellent that there are some parents on this site who can offer so much of their life experience. Thank you for accepting my friend request!
