Wow, been a long time since I’ve actually looked forward to messages from someone.
“Way down here” (based on CT hint) = not really distant “way down” to here but more than a schosh way down to here.
Not sure what happened. Mas said she got my note but was having trouble emailing via Chrome and would get back in a “moment” (that was a day ago)… hope Mas is okay. Can’t nag mods too much, they’re verrrry busy elves.

Well good evening PK!!! Self shouts…frustrating isn’t it. You would think that there would be some (pardon the term) wise ass pop up that says: “hey buddy, you really need help, shouting to yourself like that, do you honestly expect a response!?”)

Oh nutmeg and cinnamon are but two of the ingredients…but… Way down here…curiosity strikes as to location and time difference but alas, I shall not inquire such personal information in deference to your privacy here on Help.

Bubblewrap…pop! oh the days of being young and stomping and laughing fully and completely.

Computers and for that matter TV is centrally located in my home but for reasons that are slightly different than most, I believe that once home, the family should enjoy time together, no need to be in separate rooms and unable to converse whilst engaged in other activites. I monitor my kids use of the computer on a regular basis not as a trust issue but sometimes there is a lack of awareness as to what is safe and after all mistakes happen.

Nothing from Mas1st yet as to the other option to communicate/wax poetic. I will make sure that my email is open to her if needed as she is on my friends list.

foibles…ah, none that I have seen, but ASSUMING you are human, than you shall be prone to them. foibles are fodder for frolicky laughter…enjoy life.

Arrrggggghhhhhhh I shouted myself again. I HATE doing that!

Good morning to you, mistress of the bubbling apple butter cauldron. I can almost smell the nutmeg (cinnamon?) way down here.
Fear not the initial confusion over choices in protective bubblewrap for your PC. Most security apps are now pretty much on auto-pilot for the express benefit of newbies. Your learning curve should be oriented toward identifying and avoiding fraudulent offers for said bubblewrap. (trust me, you’ll be much better at this than your kids, which is why I maintain that no kid should touch the parent’s PC) OTOH, IMHO kids shouldn’t be allowed their own PC unless it’s placed in a public/family area and has certain features enabled to ensure safe/wise surfing. None of this “I vant to be alone” stuff. (easy for me to say, I don’t have any rugrats)
Don’t fret misspellings! I’d have never known had you not told me… someday I might even admit to my foibles. (I got plenty)
Now, get back to work! :)

Hello PK!!! Good Morning!

I must keep this short..I am work and have much to do.

I shall await Mas1st message and I am honored that you have considered a viable option.
I will explore the links further from home.
I live in a very rural area and the plumber was a friend of a friend (we all belong to the same R & G club).

Yes, I do both and I make the best apple butter known to man (or so I am told). I must admit it is better than most I have tried. It is time consuming but for those who find relaxation in cooking, it is a well loved endeavor.

I was not aware of the stigma of La La Land…I most certainly do not reside in LA nor do I experience delusional or psychotic episodes. (but I was alive in the 70’s….LOL). Land of Nod…ah well, I tried to get there but once again sleep is the enemy for the nightmares shall not rest. Perhaps someday they will be conquered, but in many ways, I owe them who I am today. (perhaps looking for the silver lining…)

As to the rest…well you have me quite turned about and confused, I know of firewalls, zip files but nothing else. My children have their computer and I have mine.

I am afflicted with dsylexia (so I don’t always catch some of the misspellings…please excuse despite my best proofing efforts). I am a fan of spell check for it catches that which I miss.

Have a wonderful day!

Evening, Jade,
Our good moderator Mas1st agreed to pass along a message to you containing a clearer explanation of why I choose to be “friendless” here, plus a viable alternative. I’d be honored if you’d at least try.
WWT thread -
http://help.com/post/222855-worldwide…
(the links to trusted software astronomy sites are up, but the extra links to live feeds won’t be there until maybe the morrow… haven’t tested some of ‘em yet)
Now that’s one kind-hearted plumber. Usually, one can expect a bill large enough to cover a kid’s college tuition. Or, perhaps my experiences reflect the less personable atmosphere of urban/suburban areas.
You bake bread AND make apple butter?!?! Now you’re just teasing me, right? I’m passably good at making various doughs, but have never attempted apple butter.
Did you perchance mean “off to dreamland” or “land of nod” cause to my recollection, “la la land” usually pertains to Los Angeles, or a psychotic/delusional episode. (and if you’re in LA OR delusional, it’d break my heart)
I practice very safe computer - I’ve downloaded hundreds upon hundreds of programs, but simple precautions have kept my PC clean for years:
>>> exercising a little commonsense as to how/where to obtain safe downloads (I’ve no need for WOT, but newbies should use it… IMHO, it’s better than McAfee’s linkscan); >>> making sure your firewall, AV, Hosts file and antimal apps are continually updated;
>>> following SOP - setting a system restore point prior to installing anything, and rightclicking and scanning any exe/zip file before opening/installing it;
>>> never ever letting a stranger (especially teenagers) get their mitts on my computer. Every client who fails to listen to me and shares their business computer with their kids seems to end up regretting it.
Well, I hope Mas hurries, cause these long shouts are really difficult to proof.

Good Evening PK (at least on my end of the world…LOL). ahhh…where to begin. I am interested in links to the WWT thread as I would like to share with my daughter (I already told her about it’s existence and she is quite interested. She is distinguished honors student and is the epitome of a human sponge when it comes to knowledge.) It’s my job to soak as much as I can into her whilst I can.

My step dad has the wisdom earned of hard living and a generous soul.

The plumber left the bill with Merry Christmas written on it and no balance to be paid. (I am not an emotional person, but tears of gratitude welled up I can’t deny). He is a friend of a friend, he will receive fresh baked bread and homemade apple butter this weekend (I am a bit old fashioned that way.) I have those hose clamps and rubber sleeves handy, but this pipe was up in the wall (not that handy!)and I learned by trial and error where the main shut off valve resides.

A computer newbie you bet…I have both IE and Firefox. I always fear downloads, how does one know what is safe anymore?

Photo - thanks, it is me and that’s my pup -self taken with a cell phone so quality is poor.

chinese character person - that’s Brian or AKS as he is also known by. The chinese symbols stand for Brian. He is really quite an amazing person. He is one of the people who helped me very much during my divorce aftermath for which I will always hold a special place for him in my heart.

Humanizing influence- why thank you!

Prior posts cathartic? Absolutely, much of what I aired here was never discussed before and I found it very cleansing to bare my soul. Going to therapy was not beneficial, I am too much a critic of how can a person help without some experience of a hard life/emotional pain. Here, whilst still fairly anon, I was able to bare my soul to people who more or less understood, or suffered even more. That sharing and caring was worth it all. Oh, I still have some of the issues that crop up from time to time, nightmares and agoraphobia but for the most part I have grown from the experience and that so to speak achieved the goal.

I would be very interested to know which one touched close to home. I will never pry but always willing to listen and converse on any topic.

PK - so far it’s all been very good and enjoyable.

Hope you are well!

Ooops, I was a little brusque with your friend (the chinese character person) a little while ago. This happens from time to time, especially when someone who doesn’t know me unwittingly insults me. (or vice versa) Message boards and strong opinions tend to breed such clashes. That he seeks facts is good, so I will make an effort to play nice. You have a humanizing influence.

Sorry for delay… the faster I run the behinder I get. My original thought about boring telescope feeds (and a desire to keep discoveries close to the vest until publication) means there apparently are only a few, and they go on and off line. If you’re interested, I’ll post the links on the WWT thread. Your step dad’s maxim is basically correct. The unmentioned qualifiers inherent within that saying range from - free unsolicited advice needs to be further vetted (the hidden cost) to solicited but over-priced “professional” advice STILL needs to be researched/confirmed.
The spam comment was in jest. I never pass along spam, chainltrs, or malware sites or programs.
Speaking of pros, I hope the plumber did a good job for a fair price. Best to always know where the shut off valve is, and to keep a few hose clamps and rubber patches handy!
If you’re a computer newbie (IE or FireFox?), there are critical (free) computer apps you need to consider. For one - www.mywot.com comes highly recommended
PS- Really really nice photo.

Ok I will call you “PK” (pristine knowledge is the translation and PS is too confusing with post script…)

A good cook, never calls anyone late to dinner! She wants her food savored and enjoyed whilst hot!

I have not checked out the links, I am actually working from home as I had a pipe burst in my basement at 3am this morning, so I had quite the clean up on my hands and now I await the plumber’s arrival.

Hmmm…yes I imagine the if images were available from the WWT it wouldn’t exactly be entertaining, but curiosity does thrive within the mind.

I will have to explore those sites later on. I am still tenative on the computer my skills are at best very limited and fear prevents me from downloading from unknown sites.

Oh yes, if you can’t tell yet, I encourage my rats to learn as much about the world around them as I can so why not extend it to the universe, limits are for the drones! Just hold the spam, never liked it before computers (it really is not meat) and well, I prefer bacon.

Pleasant dreams!

I was about to crash when you asked about real-time WWT images. You mean like a live street web cam, only linked to Hubble… or old man Smith’s backyard telescope? I doubt it but honestly don’t know. It’d likely be pretty boring, nothing like the colorized photos the PR dept releases unless you happen to be watching when the sun goes nova. Oooh my eyes my eyes I’m blind! I just downloaded the latest version a couple hours ago, haven’t poked around, yet. Remind me when/if I wake up.

Not to worry (can I call you PS…your name is just way too long, LOL)

I watch very few movies but that one was recommended to me as one to own, and I do, I see much of them in myself as well.

50’s…my you are old!!! just kidding, and remember it’s not the cakes that trigger the smoke alarms, its the candles and howlong it takes those aged lungs to muster enough breath to huff, puff and snuff!

I really enjoy that quarks post, the poster is a friend and he is one for fact before making a decision.

I did think that the video was quite impressive it does not contain all the answers, but the technology behind such a device is mind blowing. Imagine taking all the images from a number of optical devices and combining them into one picture, but it would seem that that one picture is still limited to the highest quality of the available resources, no?

I love the reply from one person that the universe is a sphere, this is exactly what I believe the poster is trying to feter out(?) but I can’t personally speak for him. People make blanket statements as fact when in truth they don’t have a damn clue as to what they are saying. This guy/gal it seemed to me anyway, was confusing the earth’s atmostphere with the universe, quite the difference.

I believe I once read that some scientists believe the universe exists in layers or perhaps dimensions. But then how to prove such a theory? Perhaps it explains deja vu, and that we are mirror images of ourselves light years away and somehow there is a connection to our other dimensional selves which causes those experiences.

all in all it is quite interesting to discuss even if the answers elude.

Be Well,
Jade

Hope you never take offense at my tongue-in-cheek comments, Jade. My bark is intentionally much worse than my bite. Especially when a smiley face is lurking nearby.
FWIW, I gave Secondhand Lions top marks on Netflix. Mighty good flick, that… maybe because I did see a lot of myself in their cantankerous nature! I’m nothing if not noncomformist.
Age may just be a number, but once ya get into the 50’s (I speaketh from experience) and cakes start triggering the smoke detectors, you begin to sense the inevitable approaching from over the horizon, like the sound of the Langoliers.

some might think that I would take offense to that (your a gurl) comment, but I don’t. There are definite differences in the physical abilities of the male and female genders. I have no upper body strength so to pull a recurve for a significant amount of time would be very taxing on this poor wussy!

Scaring off salesman heh? You sound like one of the characters from Second Hand Lions. Sittin’ there on your front porch shot gun across your lap waiting patiently for the next unsuspecting target to come along.

Age has nothing to do with anything, I am proud to say I am 41 and feel and look a heck of a lot younger. Age is a number that’s all. Health and attitude (especially when Health fails)is more important in determining ‘real age’.

(ha…damn nearly shouted myself - thank goodness for cut and paste!)

grrrrrr I just shouted myself again.
Aw, it’s okay for you to use the wussy feature… you’re a gurl. :D But, you sure don’t sound like a drone, and teaching your daughter any sort of live-off-the grid independence skills (hunting, gardening, cooking, etc) is a wise thing.
Me, I’m too old and addicted to tv to totally abstain, but I’ve pared usage way down and am a crack shot with the mute button.
As for crossbows, wouldn’t use one to hunt. Far too inaccurate. Works fine to scare off encyclopedia and vacuum salesmen, though.

Report this shout to moderators

Jade

Oh dear…I happen to shoot with a compound bow, so I guess then I am a wussy? LOL. My daughter who is 12 and I go target shooting regularly. And death to many a CLAY bird makes getting the real ones a bit easier. A hunter generally does know how to approach quietly and hit their mark (or SNEAK, as you say.) A crossbow? Never tried it, here in CT the only ones who are permitted to hunt with a Cross bow are handicap hunters.

Me? A mindless drone, most definitely not!

Not only do my interests and hobbies reflect me as one who prefers a well rounded life, but to further illustrate, I seldom view the tv (less than 20 hours in 2008), and I used to limit my children’s viewing time. Now, TV is their last choice on a regular basis.

As for the BT - he remains the same and it’s affect on my daughter is showing, she wants very little to do with him anymore. Without going into much detail, I had a horrible relationship with my own father and I try with all my might to encourage a strong bond with both children and their father (regardless of my opinions of the self centered bastard). I would love them to have what was robbed from me, but that is not my doing, it is strictly within his control and I will always do my best to foster such a bond. I am much like your friend and I am not capable of revenge for it is not honorable. I will not be a doormat but to act with poor judgment or questionable intent will serve no purpose.

Be well!

BTW- You closed your plea for help with a BT (brainless twit, i.e., pain-in-the-butt ex) many moons ago, but I just read it and wanted to throw in my ha’penny. I suspect the “problem” hasn’t gone away and it likely won’t unless the BT is struck by a meteorite. I’ve watched (from afar) as a good friend struggled to be a decent mother and sole provider to 2 sprogs (just larnt that bit o’slang) while the BT caused endless hassles. I agreed wholeheartedly with her decision early on to remain the responsible/mature one and avoid badmouthing the BT, positing that since kids are brighter than they appear, in all likelihood the years of thankless effort should be rewarded. She bit her tongue raw in the early years as the kids oft said that BT was “great” (read a lenient, fun-loving, transient “pal”) and whined how she was too strict day in and day out. (setting rules, boundaries, being on the mommytrack as a full-time parent AND full-time rising star in her field) Well, 15 years have passed. The BT is still a right royal layabout and a-hole (never paying support, filing legal challenges at every turn, badmouthing her, questioning her parenting, etc), but the kids have turned out great. They’re finally beginning to recognize who’s their REAL friend and parent, a bond that’ll last a lifetime as they lose all respect for the BT. Took an enormous amount of self-determination and self-control for her to hold the line. (far more than I have… I’d have offed the BT long ago) Since you can’t reason with youngsters without it coming off as sour grapes, let the BT hoist himself on his own petard, slowly and surely. Remember, revenge is a dish best served cold. Best to you.

Intrigue is good, though I think most go with enigmatically exasperating. Thanks for that ephemeral vote of confidence.

“Checked by someone you never expected.” That could be entertaining if they didn’t rub my nose in it too much. I make no claim to having all the answers, but am content with my positions and predictions. So far, no one’s clotheslined me… and as far as I know, only Death’s planning the ultimate checkmate. Unless that’s YOU sneaking up behind me!

Pawns and ants (and lemmings)… yes. Wasps (vespids)… not so much. Many function relatively independently within the hive collective while others are solitary. Remember, never be a mindless drone, and only twins* appreciate a clone. (I’m a poet!) *triplets, quads, etc.

Love gardening, reading, archery (recurved bow or crossbow, but none of that wussy cable/axel & stabilizer stuff)… but TRAP shooting? How many poor defenseless clay pigeons have to die before the persecution ends?
