  Xeno Dragon: I’m an atheist. I won’t come knocking on your door or calling you on the phone or approaching you the street trying to convert you into being an atheist. It’s astounding how much money, resources, and influence large religious groups have. They can afford to buy the influence. I resent the fact that they pay no taxes and are subsidized by the government to the tune of billions of $. Faith-based initiatives, my butt! Many religious organizations would shut down rather quickly w/o government assistance.
  
  I’ve found it pretty easy to ignore all the churches, the billboards, and their TV networks. When they come to my door to “give” me reading materials, I have no problem shutting my door and going back to what I’m had been doing. That’s about all I can suggest–ignore them!
  
  You’ve put your finger on what bothers me most about religion groups (other than the fact that they have things completely wrong): they attempt to inject their religious dogma into national policy and their ideas are very often counter-productive to the advancement of science and medicine; they often interfere in the medical care of people, when that medical care is best determined by the doctor, the patient, and family; their beliefs, which they claim is based on morality, are actually more damaging than those things they protest and attempt to prevent.
  
  And last, I say that when you come here to express your frustration with the whole lot of them, they follow you to insult your intelligence and opinions. In short, when you clearly express expression with their intrusion into your life, they feel compelled to intrude into your life _here_. I’ve been through exactly what your going to get here…you’ve probably only seen the beginning of their attacks. I say, ignore them for they are the “forces of satan”.
  
  They are wrong. You are right. Don’t back down. Don’t yield a single inch to them. Being nice to them will not slow their attacks and will be seen as a sign of weakness on your part. BTW, with me here, I think even more conservative Christians will be drawn to this posts. I’ve got a bad reputation.

  Look up “photosynthesis” in an online dictionary. If you are close to the correct spelling, you’ll find the word. photosynthesis is the correct spelling.
  
  If you have a word processor on your computer, it almost certainly has a spelling checker. But again, you must be reasonably close to the correct spelling or the checker will have no idea what you are talking about. If your even close, or can get close, the word proseccor spell checker will provide the correct spelling.
  
  Mostly, you learn spelling by reading and writing a lot.

• Lawn is the largest crop in the US!
  

  I agree about over-lawning and watering. People feel they need acres of lawn when leaving much of their lot treed would be far more ecologically sound. Golf courses in particular tick me off. I have a friend with 3 acres of lawn which he created himself and then complains about the time required to mow it with a tractor. I’ve given him the solution–simply replant it with trees. Very wasteful. Basically, everything we do adds to environmental problems. Eliminate or minimize those things that increase environmental problems and the real bad stuff coming down the road won’t happen.
  
  There is no need to water your lawn. Actaully, 8 AM is the best time to water your lawn. No, I don’t know why. Don’t water your lawn at all–I don’t water mine. You made your chances as to where to live–deal with it. Zacharyzoosh and I disagree about one thing. The wasted water that evaporates doesn’t just disappear–it ends up in the atmosphere and falls as rain elsewhere. Still watering your lawn is a waste, and if it’s actually required, you should not have a lawn. You made the choice as to where to live–deal with it.
  
  The totality of all the little things we do has a major impact on many things. One of my biggest pet peeves are all the little electric vampire devices we hace in our homes. Every clock/radio has an LED display. Same for my stove, many people’s coffee maker, etc. Many pf my stereo components have a an LED indicator to show that it’s receiving power. Mnay other devices in my house have LCD displays on all the time. Look around your home–these wasteful devices are everywhere. Individually, each device uses little energy. As a guess, the total power used may be 60 watts or high. They are on 24 hours per day. Would you intentially leave a 60 watt light bulb all day? What to do? I don’t know. “Live simply so others may live.”

  Forget god. He doesn’t exist. You have only what you can see, plus the other 96% of the matter in the universe that you can’t see. I think only the 4% that you can sense matters. There are people here who can provide practical advice.

  The term hippie came to mean anybody that conservatives, or really anyone, did not like from the 1960s. You still see some people around that you just know are hippies and I mean that in a positive way. AT least I see them around here…I have in mind one fellow I occasionally see, dressed as below and reading a boob called “Anarchy”
  
  Maybe you should start with the clothes. Blue jeans with holes all over…and I don’t mean the new fachion type jeans with holes. I mean jeans with holes you _earned_. Scandals are OK, but barefoot is better. Sneakers or beat up work boots are OK as long as you did no work in the work boots. Old beat-up tie-dyed T-shirts are a must…not the new bright color type you can buy at the mall. A blue jean type jacket with peace symbols and anti-war stuff is also very good. In many respects, our current situation, bogged down in two wars that we seem to be unable to win, a totally clueless president is very much like the late 1960s and early 1970s.
  
  Then there’s attitude. The world is screwed up and America is once again largely to blame. We all know it. A good hippie would buy a VW micro-bus or beetle, paint it up with many colors and travel the country protesting the war. Non-violence, a willingness to protest environmental destruction, wars. Some smoked cannabis. We can’t talk about drug use here. You must be nonconformist, have long hair, and be a dropout from society for a while. There may still be some communes from the 1960s around…they can point the way.
  
  Being a hippie is very hard work and takes commitment. It’s not all fun and games. I was never good enough to make the cut.

• Religion Rant.
  

  Dunpar23: I agree with you. I’m not sure help.com is the place to do battle, but it _one_ place where we can hold the line against religious dogma. When someone comes here for help, telling them to pray just doesn’t help. I’ve been digging around a bit to locate other atheists. There are a couple USENET Newsgroups that I’ve not actually visited and checked out yet. They have similar names and one lists more than 99,999 posts…my News Client can’t handle that one. They are: alt.atheism and alt.athiesm (yes, misspelled).
  
  A good web site is http://richarddawkins.net/. Richard Dawkins is an evolutionary biologist and author of “The God Delusion”. The first chapter of that book can be downloaded there. There is also a lot of other reading material there. I’ve read “Letter To A Christian Nation” by Sam Harris”, a short read. It rips christianity, especially as (mis)practiced in the U.S.) apart. I don’t seem to have the time to get around to do much more reading on religion and atheism.
  
  Stay hidden. The forces of evil, in the form of christians, jews, muslims, etc…. are everywhere and some _will_ do you harm if given the chance. I believe in religious freedom and, even more so, freedom from religion. One step that should be taken as soon as we rid ourselves of George W. Bush is to eliminate government subsidies and all tax breaks given to churches. And no more government-funded “faith based initiatives”. I suppose we can then try to prevent catholic priests from molesting children. But since the catholic church knew about and concealed the truth about that for many years, we face a very steep uphill battle there.
