Mini-Profile

Note: This all may be a bit too much more than you’d want to bother reading or knowing about me. I just felt compelled to do my profile like this, in the hopes that I’d be able to reach the most people with similar interests, concerns, experiences, goals, needs, etc.–whom I can help and who can help me. I hope I’m right. We shall see. I do sincerely hope this does not offend anyone, as it is not my intention to offend.
My birthname is Samuel. Most people, including family and friends call me Sam. I also prefer Sam, as opposed to Samuel or Sammy–only my girlfriend can call me anything she wants (as long as she says it with love (((smile!)))). I was born, and raised and have lived all my life in New York City, in various parts. I have visited and stayed in other places as well in the U.S. I attended Catholic School–1st through 8th grade (I was left back in the first grade, because I did not meet grade standards). I was reading 12.4 level, by the time I got to the 7th grade, but I also wanted to drop out of school by then. I was very unhappy with school–the school I was in. I had my first introduction to employment when I was about 8 or 9 years old, when a friend of my family took me to his job, in response to my expressed desire to work. Soon thereafter I also worked in a pizza parlor and my uncle’s restaurant while I was still attending Catholic elementary school. I began to drink with friends and acquintances and to get high, sometime around the eighth grade and certainly before high school. I had a hard time with authorityI was very shy growing up and had my first girlfriend and learned how to kiss around the eighth grade too. (Cheeesh! This sounds more like an autobiography than a profile.) My father was hardly around ever and when he was I did not feel like he really appreciated me or that he wanted to have a meaningful relationship with me. I did not respect authority. I started to look up to and admire the gangsters or gangster-type individuals in my neighborhood, because they were rebellious and did not seem to respect authority either. I didn’t realize then, that I was becoming like them and that what I thought were cool and desirable role-models–they were just the contrary–rebels without any real causes (similar to the movie with James Dean and Sal Mineo). Instead of being part of a solution or a better situation we just worsened our situation and that of those around us.
I was suspended from school as a high school freshman, as a result of my chronic truancy. I was transferred to another high school, but dropped out before finishing my sophomore year. I was always a very good student and occasionally, even a teacher’s pet and positive role model when I applied myself. But, again, I was just too busy trying to be a rebel and not focusing on creative planning and coming up with solutions. From then on, I maintained a reckless lifestyle of alcohol and drug-addiction and unsafe sex (bisexual).
I became clean and sober–free of drugs and alcohol, 27 years ago. I returned to school and have a year left to complete my bachelor’s degree. I want to get my Master’s degree in Music Therapy. Music has always been my first love–I sing and play percussion and create and apply music (with my students or otherwise) whenever possible. My second love is writing– mostly about self-actualization, but also poetry and songs and about such things as the state of the educational system in new york city. I have been working in The New York City Department of Education for 20 years–first as a Bilingual Educational Assistant and for some time now as a Bilingual Educational Associate. I hope to retire next year and soon after finish and get my Master’s and work as a Music Therapist, and expand on this career further still. I want to use my skills, experience, and love of these things to help to improve and correct conditions around global warming, drug-addiction, hunger, poverty, malnutrition, health, racism, child abuse, battering, war, human and animal rights, improving environmental conditions, etc. How can I help you?
Shortly after my separation (from my wife– 5+ years ago), I met the most amazing and wonderful woman. We have a serious and very lively committed monogamous relationship. We are very much in love and supportive of each other.
Currently, I am looking for and in dire need of an apartment of at least, one bedroom, here in New York City. Please refer to my post regarding this, or email me at (email removed). Please no cranks! Thank you! Sam
