  If your parents are still sexually active, and your father fails to wear a condom, this may put your mother at risk for STDs, so I think this issue should be addressed right away. In addition to being subtle with your father, you could be subtle with your mother too - you could approach her with questions rather than heading directly to the points of his bisexuality and adultery. It may be that she knows, or at least suspects, more than you think she does.

  My husband and I talked about this sort of thing in our early years of marriage, but now that we’ve been together for nearly 2 decades I sure am thankful we never did it.

  I am not a professional counselor or therapist, but my opinion is this: if you have been replying to his e-mails all along, please don’t stop now (but also don’t start if you haven’t been). It sounds like he is in need of a friend, as well as professional assistance. It seems that you care about his long-term well-being, so if you could assist in finding someone to aid him (or maybe even a support group that he could join) that would be a kind thing to do. However, if he refuses to get the professional attention he seems to need, please don’t let him drag you down too. Also, unless you have occasionally continued to have personal visits with him, I would strongly urge you to avoid one-on-one contact. It is sad when someone you cared for goes through difficult times, and you may even feel some guilt when comparing his state to your own happiness, but this fellow’s state of mind is not your responsibility. If something bad was to end up happening, whether you took action or not you would probably have some feelings of being responsible, but you would just have to keep telling yourself the facts, which would be that he, and not you, made the choices and took the actions that resulted in the outcome.

  When I have trouble with mechanical items I turn to the operator’s manual. If you can not locate the one that came with the mower you may be able to find it online by entering the mower’s make, model number and basic description. As already noted multiple times, there are many different ways to start them, depending on the type of mower it is. This reply is probably coming in rather late, as mowing the lawn was probably something you wanted to do immediately, but if it is still in time, and you can provide more details about the type of mower it is, I may be able to give you some pointers.
