  My opinion is that you should not go. Rabid consumerism is no way to deal with stress. Black Friday is a symbol of what is wrong with our country.
  Is it possible for you to hang out with your friends without going out and buying more useless junk no one needs? And if not, don’t you think that’s a problem?

  That sounds similar to something I dealt with in college. I was broken hearted and let my grades slip pretty bad. I was pretty depressed, and had such a hard time dealing with it all that I just kind of collapsed in on myself.
  It sounds like you have a good support system around, and are keeping a great attitude about it all. I am glad you shared with us, and that your outlook is so good. Go get em, tiger!! Grrrowl!

  Yeah…”survival” is what a university degree is all about. Back when we were hunter/gatherers, all we had to do was find food/water/etc. to stay alive. Now, we have to get an education and get a job to stay alive. Some people find loopholes. Others end up homeless or worse.
  
  Having said all that, I didn’t get my college degree. But it wasn’t for lack of wanting one. And I’ll be going back to school to finish as soon as I possibly can.

  I agree with almost everything everyone has said…although I have a different understanding about the first line than green_eyes. Shakespeare says “let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments” - which means, to me, that he does not think there are any impediments that could get in the way of people who are truly in love. This whole sonnet is about unconditional love - no “impediments” can get in its way, nothing can remove it, nothing can change it, not time, not any kind of “tempests” or problems…it will endure ANYTHING (even to the “edge of doom”!) and he is saying (like green_eyes said) that if someone can prove him wrong on this, then he has never written a line (which we know to be untrue), and furthermore, that no man has ever really loved.

  I think it is just unconscionable for companies to do this. Labor laws were put in place to keep this exact kind of thing from happening, yet companies are still able to do pretty much whatever they want. “Mandatory Overtime” is one of the ugliest phrases in the English language. My dad retired from a major cookie factory that had started doing the same thing in the last few years. Despite the fact that he had to retire a few years early because he is now disabled (yeah, working in those conditions for 30 years usually ends in some kind of disability), he is actually one of the lucky ones because he doesn’t have to work 7 days a week anymore. I wish you all the best in this struggle, and I am sending lots of positive energy your way. I hope that we, as a nation, can get this kind of thing changed for everyone’s sake.

  Thanks for the encouragement, it’s very much appreciated. It’s one of those cases where getting my thoughts typed out really helped a lot. I am glad to know that it sounds at least feasible to a few people.

  Then you first need to work on that. If you aren’t happy with yourself, you can’t be happy with someone else. Take care of you first, and the rest will fall into place. Being in a relationship is not the most important thing in life.
