  2greeneyes: Im touched and really feel for you. But I completely agree with Richard. It’s up to you. However I something else to add
  Men don’t listen. as sometimes women don’t. But when they have the idea that your pursuits are bogus or not nearly as important as their manly ones that accomplish something, it doesn’t occur to them that they’re walking all over you.. And, as you know, kids are just kids and will take what they can.. forever, long after they are past being of a childish age.
  
  I think all the above practical suggestions are great, with signs, and taking your own time, and responding with more authority instead of being walked on.. all great!
  However, none of it will make a difference much until you truly get through to them.. until all 3 (or at least your husband, and then he can help with the sons) LISTEN to you.
  
  You have to somehow condense what you’ve wrote in the above post and responses and sit down and tell your husband what you mean.
  I suggest:
  
  1. making sure he knows you want to talk and its a big deal.
  2. talk to him differently than you usually do.. be VERY slow in your speech (you konw, deliberate) and choose your words VERY VERY carefully. Don’t use more than 500 words for the whole conversation.
  3. Explain point by point (no more than 5.. 4 is best) what you are trying to say and what may be the solution, but bottom line: IF MOMMA AINT HAPPY AINT NOBODY HAPPY! (even though you never thought about it, you might even bring up what silverwings said.. Im not sure I would put it that way, but when women’s emotional needs are not met, they cannot function and MUST find some way. Men have to able to understand that.. and unfortunately they never do and thats why the divorce rate is so high.
  
  If you start doing things without them really hearing you and understanding you, then they will percieve your actions as something else: maybe see you as lashing out underhandedly or just being a “b” or something.
  They must be made to understand as the only way men can (especially bull-headed busy ones like your men):
  in slow, short speech with lots of pauses and lots of time for them to think and respond.
  If your husband retorts quickly, you know he didnt hear you.
  I think this discussion when you have it needs to be a long one in time, but a short one in words.
  
  
  Anyway.. Im really touched by this post. If my father and stepfather would have been able to hear truly hear the inner workings of my mother’s mind as you have posted above, she would have lived a much happier life and so would they.. and I probably would have had to learn some lessons the easier way than always the hard one.

  tttillet: Yes we all know the present problems, but we need to vote now as this system is in place, for the person we think will change the system. If we don’t vote the system will get more corrupt. The more people vote, the less opportunity the system has to continue being corrupt. Complaining doesn’t help, voting does.

  My God, any more slack and you’d hang yourself! Which is exactly what is happening.
  This generation of children has more tools and hand-holding than ever before. The students in the rest of the world are learning more things faster than in the U.S. The reason for homework and school in general is to make you think and be able to come up with problems and solve them yourself, creating things that don’t already exist in the world. With the internet, homework is SO much easier than it was when I was growing up, but “you kids” are still asking for the answers!!!
  It’s like a drug. If you get all the answers given to you you all your life you will choke on your own ignorance and be a blight on society instead of a citizen that does something with your life.
  
  I will not cut any slack to anyone. F’ing learn something like I did, and quit asking for handouts!!!!

  It’s not going to happen to you, and if it does you won’t be prepared for it until that exact moment, so believe that it wont happen.
  When you believe it wont happen and then act that way, the universe has a way of making it so.
